Croatia is by far the most beautiful country I have ever been to. When we arrived in Split at seven in the morning we figured we'd be exhausted after 24 hours of traveling, until our train came around a bend and the sun was rising, the sky was cotton candy pink and the ocean was the clearest turquoise I have ever seen. The mountains were spotted with white houses with Nantucket red roofs.
We found our hostel (the sheets were ironed!)shortly after arriving, but had to kill sometime before check in at 9. It was easy to do. We were blown away the moment we stepped off the train and made our way into old town. We got a coffee along the promenade watching all the yachts come in and out, walked through an amazing street market that had lots of goodies for is to snack on. An old woman hand fed me a fig and we walked around with a carton of strawberries.
We went back to our really nice hostel put on cute summery clothes and made our way to Bacvice beach with a gelato in hand. We were getting the craziest looks from the locals because for them high sixties/ low seventies is too cold for romper and bathing suits, but perfect for three native New Englanders. We spent the afternoon walking along Bacvice and through town stopping at a few bars along the way. We had so many laughs yesterday afternoon between charading our way though the market, figuring out prices and all the pictures we took along the way.
We scouted out an adorable restaurant with outdoor seating on the water on our way back from the beach. We got dressed up for the first time since arriving and had a lovely seafood dinner.
Leaving today for Venice was really hard. None of us wanted to leave Split. Split is a picture perfect European beach town with awesome beach bars, views, scenery, landscape and people. Pictures don't even do it justice and I can't even put it into words at how breathtaking it is. Between the three of us we probably said unbelievable, gorgeous, or I can't believe we're here a thousand times.
This morning we had some extra Kuna to spend and went back to our favorite market. We got a lot of snacks for our long journey! I got a carton of fresh strawberries, bananas, a feta thing, sweet bread and sweeten figs that Alyssa would have gone crazy for! I want nothing more than to come back to Split someday soon with all the people I love.
Love,
Al
