Today we travelled to Ranakpur a small village, actually more like a collection of hotels close to yet another temple. The highlight of this was supposed to a Hindu temple with 1444 individual pillars but even with that, the temples are becoming a little repetitive. We have spent the last 2 days in Jodhpur as known as; 'the blue city' because many of its buildings are painted a beautiful sky blue. Apparently the blue has 2 useful qualities; as well as helping keep the house cool in summer it also repels insects. It's amazing how much the landscape changed on the way to Jodhpur we went from proper desert, barren and flat, to much greener and many more hills. Yesterday was our day and night in the desert riding camels. For the first half of the day we wondered round and explored Jaisalmer's impressive hill top, which as you approach the town appears to rise out of the desert like a strange mirage. After an hours drive further into the desert we mounted our camels and set off for the dunes to watch the sunset. It quickly occurred to us that camels were neither fast or comfortable! Just a short one today as most of yesterday was filled with the drive to Jaisalmer, the golden city; because of the colour of the sandstone used for almost all the buildings. We are heading off further into the desert today to do a camel safari and spend a night sleeping in the desert.

Today saw us get up and after a typically strange Indian breakfast, head out for a guided tour of some of Mandawa's most impressive havelis.
