Hi guys, heres our last ever update so keep your wits about you because its a rollercoaster of emotions!
Things get a little strange to start with as during our flight to LA, we crossed the international date line. This meant that we were eventually starting the last day in Fiji again, so even though we left Fiji at 10pm on the 5th, we landed in LA around 1pm, also on the 5th. We were a little phased by this but we weren’t too bad. We took a transfer bus from LAX into the city which unfortunately had to made a drop off in Long Beach which is pretty much in exactly the wrong end of the city so it took us a little over 2 hours to get to our hostel. Once we got checked in we went for an explore in the surrounding area. The location was perfect - we were right on Hollywood boulevard, opposite the Kodak Theatre (where the Oscars are held) and Grumman’s Chinese Theatre (where all the handprints are!). We walked up and down the walk of fame, trying to find Sylvester Stallone's star (we wouldnt see it until the night before we left) and then went for a very nice California Pizza Co pizza (mine had a whole salad and dressing on the top!).
On Tuesday 6th February (it finally came!), we woke up around lunchtime feeling a little strange and decided to go for one of the famous hollywood homes tours. We saw a list of famous people's houses including:
John Travolta,
Meg Ryan,
Julia Roberts,
Jack Nicholson,
Leonardo Di Caprio,
Elton John,
Frank Sinatra,
Robert Redford,
Carrie Fisher,
Mat Le Blanc,
JLo,
and a bunch of other celebrities who we didn't know.
That night we went to Johnny Rocket's famous american burger restaurant (Christina goes there!) followed by a visit to a comedy club on the famous sunset strip. When we arrived at the club, the barmaid (an aspiring actress from Detroit - we would find that there wasn't anyone who was in LA who didn't have a mug shot to give you or a demo CD for you to listen to!) claimed that it wasn't strange for Chris Rock to turn up and do an impromptu set, so we were quite excited about what we would see. There were about 10 different acts, each with their own show on some obscure cable channel, each of which were funny in their own way (apart from one guy who thought that wearing a suit and holding a newspaper whilst talking about how badly his set was going was funny). It did become apparent that being the only English couple in the crowd (though some came later) and sitting in the front row did mean that we were going to be the butt of pretty much every joke. That along with the fact that we were drunk and giggly made for a very fun night, even if Chris Rock never turned up!
On Wednesday 7th February we decided to leave Hollywood and see some other parts of LA. We took a bus to Venice beach first and saw muscle beach, walked along the promenade and that long concrete path thingy that you always see girls in bikinis rollerblading down on the TV. With it still being the middle of winter, the bikini girls weren’t there but it was still cool to see place up close after only ever seeing it on TV and in the movies. We then got several other buses (the transport systems in LA are very confusing and nomatter where you go generally take ages and are full of crazy people - one bus had 3 turrets sufferers on it!) to Melrose to see all of the fancy boutiques where the rich and famous shop. I bought a very cool hoodie from Kidrobot (dont ask how much it cost!) and then we made our way back for tea. Whilst walking to the cinema to buy some tickets, we saw some commotion outside the chinese theatre. We crossed the road to get a better look and we realised that it was the premiere of Hugh Grant and Drew Barrymore's new film "Music and Lyrics". From where we were, we could see that Drew was walking along the red carpet and then she disappeared inside. We hung around a bit longer but soon realised that Hugh was already in so we were thinking about leaving when Drew (we are on first name terms now) came back out of the theatre and ran across the road towards us and the crowds around us. In the melee which resulted, Debbie got her picture taken with Drew (miss Barrymore to you) which is an example of just how quickly crazy things can happen in LA. After we had stopped screaming like girls at an East 17 concert we went for a nice Italian then saw the Departed at the famous Kodak theatre.
On Thursday 8th February we decided that we couldn't come home without some good american clothing bargains so we headed straight to Abercrombie and Fitch in Santa Monica. A couple of hours and a few full shopping bags later, we made our way back to hollywood boulevard. That night we decided to celebrate our last day in LA (and on the whole trip!?) by visiting the Viper Room, Johnny Depp's club and the place where River Phoenix died. When we got there we found that there was a charity Hip hop night on featuring Greyskull, Freestyle and the Rock Steady Crew. The club was really small but it was pretty full with lots of cool people (a bit too cool - we seemed to be the only two who were dancing all night!) and we had lots of fun dancing right by the stage.
On Friday 9th February (OUR LAST DAY OF TRAVELLING - ARGH!!) we checked out of our hostel and took a taxi through to LAX (which was much quicker this time!), went through a ridiculous amount of security (with all jewelry and shoes removed!) and then waited a couple hours in a surprisingly small terminal (I would have expected LAX to have had a mall's worth of shops, Fiji's departures was bigger!) and at around 6pm we boarded our final plane and made our way to Heathrow (sob!)
We hope that you have enjoyed our little trip, its been amazing for us and although were looking forward to getting back to see you all, its gonna be hard to stop travelling! Thank you all for you kind messages and support, see you very soon,
Alec and Debs
