We arrived in Byron Bay on Tuesday 14th July by bus. The journey from Brisbane was fine, only took a few hours. We drove past our campsite on the way in and were gutted when we realised we'd have to walk back there with all our gear. We made it though, it was about a 20 min walk.
The campsite was realively empty and we pitched our tent at the end of a field. Alan didn't listen to my tent advice so it took longer to put up than in should have done. We got it up just as the sun was going down and we got bitten by midges. We checked out the camp kitchen which was pretty good, although it had no plates or cutlery or anything. We walked to the local supermarket and bought some plastic ones, along with food for the night. We cooked up some tinned stew in the microwave and munched it down with some crusty bread. Mmm tasy camping food. That evening we ended up just watching Top Gear and South Park in the camp kitchen before heading to bed. We sleep ok, it was easily warm enough. It rained slightly in the night but our tent stood up to it so we were pretty happy.
The next day we had a walk round the campsites. It was quite big and had a creek and a lake. There weren't many people camping. In the daytime it was really sunny and warm. After doing a load of laundry and getting some more food in from the shop we headed down to town. The walk was not a problem when we weren't carrying anything.
We walked down to town along the beach. There was hardly anyone there. The tide was really high and the water was absolutely freezing I couldn't believe it. We played a bit of frisbee ( yes we bought it with us from Thailand) We saw a few surfers. Byron Bay is a small town full of backpackers, surfers and hippies. It made a nice change from Brisbane. We walked back though the town and made a massive chilli con carne for tea. In the evening it was getting pretty chilly and we played a bit of cards in our tent. It was a bit cold in the tent that night.
The next day we left pretty early and went on a massive walk for the whole day. We walked all the way along several beaches and followed a track up to the cliffs. It was a really sunny day, but could get a bit nippy when the wind was up. ONce we got to the top of the cliffs we sat down for a bit and watched dolphins. There were quite a few of them messing around and we saw one jump out of the water which was cold. We ate our sandwiches and chilled there for a bit. We also saw a whale in the distance which was pretty good.
There were loads of fisherman on the rocks. Most of them had macs and seemed to know what they were doing, but we saw one couple get absolutely soaked by a hugh wave and all their gear got washed out to sea. It was pretty funny.
We carried on up the path past the most Eastern Point of Australia to Byron Bay Lighthouse. We admired the views for a bit before heading back down through a rainforest path. Back in town we stopped for a cup of tea as we were quite tired. We had decided to hire a bike for the next day, as as you get them for 24 hours we picked them up from the shop just as it was closing. They had a special offer on because it was winter, though we thought the weather was quite nice. We rode back, popped to the supermarket and then back to the site. We chained the bikes to a tree next to our tent.
In the evening we made a beef curry, played cards and watche some big aussie rugby game that was on before bed. We wore a load of layers this time so we were pretty cosy.
The next day we set off early on our bike ride. The man in the shop had given us a map with a few bike trails on. We followed some tracks through a national park. On the way we saw an echidna, which is like a spiky big hedgehog thing with a long nose. Apparently they are an egg laying mammal. It ran away before we could take a photo but it was pretty cool. We stopped at a nice beach and cycled through a creek. We also saw a lot of colourful parrots, they are everyway in Australia. They don't like being photographed. On the way back we stopped for a picnic, we had to give to biscuits to two massive ravens that kept menacing us. We were quite tired when we got back to the campsite and we made a big sausage meal and watched a bit of the ashes. In the evening we walked to town to go to the cinema. We saw Harry Potter and it was really busy. It was good though, even Alan enjoyed it. It was certainly much better than Transformers, that's for sure. We got back quite late, it was pretty chilly.
ON our last day we didnt do too much. Had a walk into town and faffed around. We saw loads of huge bats in the trees when we walked to town. In the evening we had a beef madras before getting an early night as we had to get up early to pack up and get the bus to Coffs Harbour the next day.
It was an early start and we had to do the big walk into town with our stuff again but we made it in time with no problems. Can't wait to camp again.
