It only took a few hours to get from Ashford to Poole on the motorway. They're great if you need to get somewhere quickly, & we needed to start seeing a bit of Devon & Cornwall before getting back to London on the 3rd Oct.

This is our little car, we stop in the country, have a cuppa & go for a walk. They're public footpaths everywhere! Then drive from Dover to Margate then through Canterbury. All through the country lanes full of fruit & flowers. Kent is the garden county & you can see why. Absolutely beautiful. It's also on the east of London & you can see the difference in the people. The white cliffs of Dover & the huge castle became insignificant when we toured around the memorial for the airmen who lost their lives defending their country. We had just seen an air show of spitfires at the Goodwood festival, so we could really empathise with these 24 yo pilots & how brave they must have been. Some of them making it back to Dover only to crash land. But a lot not making it back at all.

Hastings was the 1st of our Premier Inn nights, they told us to register on line & every 3rd night we'd book online we would get 1 night free. Ha! I was looking for anything remotely connected to one of my favourite shows, Foyles War. But it wasn't to be. Travelling on we came to Rhy, a beautiful little town. The entry to it had this huge archway in brick with rooms over the road. Hard to describe, difficult to forget tho.

What a huge place, the 2nd biggest city apparently. The famous pier was burnt down but replaced by something very decent. The architecture blew me away, & the pride they take in their designs. That should be part of our uni design students assignment, to come over & study these amazing buildings.
