For the first time in a while the trip between two places was an interesting one. We got the bus at 9 pm (already an hour late) and set off to get the boat at 7 in the morning across to the island. The driver was an absolute maniac and after a brief stop (well after the lights had been turned out and most people where asleep) it was obvious that he was trying to make up time. He was going so fast that he left the road a few times. He did make up the time that he had lost and we arrived at the ferry port at 4am and only had 3 hours to wait! This time it was me drinking in the early hours of the morning, not Sarah.
Once checked into our bungalow on the beach (best accomodation so far) we decided to see what the beach was like. It was mostly coral so you could only go out about 5 metres and even then it was only up to your knees so the best you could do was sit in it! The staff that ran the bungalows were from Laos (some of whom could never go home as they had crossed into Thailand without passports) who were crazy and never stopped joking and playing around. On the first night we ended up sitting in the bar with the owner and his wife teaching them English and sharing a Sang Som bucket (Thai whiskey that makes everybody go a little loopy). Sarah then put her i-pod on the bars speakers and danced on a little platform over the sea on her own (she was getting a lot of odd looks especially as two dogs, one called deng which means red, had befriended her and for the next few days didn't leave her side).
After a day of doing nothing (because we were horribly hungover) our third day was spent reading and in the evening we went to watch the Muay Thai. This was quite an experience as we were sat ring side and I can honestly say that I wouldn't want to be hit by one of those guys!
For our final day in Koh Phangan we hired a jeep (they refused to look at my driving licence!) and explored the island which was quite a driving experience. The roads varied from the steepist hills I've ever seen to dirt tracks, or both. Once I got the hang of these hills it became alot of fun, especially when I sent Sarah flying upwards out of her seat by hitting a huge pot hole at high speed. We also found one of the most beautiful beaches I have ever seen (even on TV) and we debated whether to blow our budget to stay there but eventually sense prevailed and we booked a ticket to Koh Tao for the next day.
The last thing to mention about our bungalows was that every night they had fresh sea food barbeque which we couldn't resist. The first night we had red snapper, second night mackeral and the last night the largest prawns I have ever seen. Each of these meals was delicious and anyone that only partially likes seafood would have been in heaven. All in all we have both thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Koh Phangan.
