Day 29: Tuesday 15th March. Slow Boat from Luang Prabang along the Mekong Delta river. By Chris.
We woke up early this morning to the rain pouring outside, which we found contiuned right throughout the day! This didn't matter too much as we were on the slow boat for around 9 hours heading up the Mekong Delta river towards the Laos/Thailand border.
The scenery was gorgeous, although slightly ruined by the wet weather, however drifting in between the mountains made the trip a bit more special!
We finally arrived at our stop off point, a town which consisted of 1 main street which led down to the river via a steep hill. We stopped for dinner that evening at one of the local restaurants for traditional Phad Thai (shock) before joinging the rest of the group in a bar for drinks.
We then headed back to the hotel in the pouring rain to hit bed before another early start the next morning.
Day 30: Wednesday 16th March. Slow Boat along the Mekong Delta river towards the Laos/Thailand border.
Another 6am start and the rain was still pouring down so we were soaked before we had even made it to the boat to begin the remainder of the journey. We slept most of this leg of the journey as there is only so much wet scenery you can look at for two days.
We reached the border around 4pm and made it through passport control unscathed, returning to Thailand where we had begun the trip. We reached our guesthouse which was gorgeous and set out to find some food for the evening as we had exhausted all of our supplies on the slow boat! An amazing chicken and cashew nut dish cheered us up after a long days travelling before heading off for an early night.
Day 31: Thursday 17th March. Bus to Chang Mai beofre getting overnight train to Bangkok. By Chris.
Another early start to the day, this time by mini-bus meant we were heading towards Chiang Mai for a few hours. On the way we stopped off at the White Pagoda (like the ice palace from Narnia!) and then at a Cashew Nut factory where we feasted on the free samples before reaching Chiang mai. Yet again the rain poured which was beginning to get a bit old by now, but once there we stopped for lunch and then set off to explore the city before boarding the evenings train to Bangkok. We decided to treat overselves with McFlurrys as the rain had slowed our sightseeing.
Anyway, we got to the train station around 6pm and settled down in our cabin before it was transformed into bunkbeds for the night, a very odd experience.
