After a few long, tired days of driving and interstate rest stops, we are finally slowing down as we approach the grand Rocky Mountains of Colorado! We definitely expected to see more snow here, but apparently it's been unusually warm for this time of year. It's been great weather for driving actually, despite the brief snow scare on the way north to St Louis from Memphis.
We drove north to the city of St Louis in Missouri for one reason - to watch an American football match. We're talking about that strange breed of football some call Gridiron, or the NFL. Having played a bit of Rugby League back in the day, Aidan has a mild interest in it, and we thought it would be an iconic and cultural experience to include on our road trip. Funnily, the St Louis Rams happened to be playing against the New Orleans Saints, the fans of which we were hanging out with only a few days earlier.
We had seen a few games on TV over the past months, and often the players were running around in snow. The city of St Louis was also covered in snow, so naturally we got pretty rugged up, ready for anything the weather could throw at us spectators. We were pretty disappointed when we entered the arena and looked up to see a fully enclosed, weather-proof dome surrounding the entire stadium! As we stripped off everything down to our T-Shirts to watch the game, we found comfort in the fact that we weren't the only ones sitting next to massive piles of unnecessary jackets and scarfs!
We sat amongst the St Louis fans, some of who seemed to be the very definition of hillbillies. It was great! The chant of the night was 'PUSH THAT SH*T IN THERE!!!' Don't ask us what it means, but it got even funnier when a few of the Saints fans came over just to stir them up. The bright lights, big-screen commercials and yelling fans were pretty distracting, but we managed to follow most of the game itself and found ourselves cheering for St Louis, mostly due to surrounding peer pressure. No doubt influenced by our enthusiastic support, the Rams won pretty convincingly!
Since then the last couple of days driving through Kansas were actually pretty soothing. There wasn't much going on really, but the rolling hills and plains were a beautiful backdrop to the endless highway. We also had time to catch up on some blogging, and noticed that the usual Christian radio stations, as well as the occasional non-denominational station, had changed their playlists to 100% Christmas songs. In fact, the Christmas theme practically hit us like a bomb. One day the world was closed for Thanksgiving and the next... BAM! Christmas! It must be tough for modern artists to make the charts at this time of year! Nevertheless, we couldn't help but get into the spirit of it all, and are really looking forward to getting back to Canada now for this festive season. Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow (but preferably not while we are driving ;))
