Amy's Adventure
So it's been over a year since I updated this and a lot has happened...
After back breaking work picking apples, berries and potatoes we finally both got full time jobs in Melbourne and found our own flat. In January 2011 we got married on the beach at Palm Cove, Queensland surrounded by friends and family and had an amazing few days up there snorkeling on the reef amongst other things.
On Feb 28th after a few days in Sydney we flew to Kuala Lumpur to start honeymoon number two!
Arrived in KL at 3am (Malaysian Airways were fab and loving the food). Taxis were too expensive and the train didn't leave til 5am so we went to the bus station and were told there would be a bus at 4. This arrived and we were told it was the wrong one. 4.30 the next one arrives - wrong one. Finally at 5.15am when we were both falling asleep ours arrived. Two hours later on a bus that felt like it was going to split in two every time we went over a bump and a driver that thought he was Michael Schumacher we got to our hotel but check in wasn't til 2pm. We were told we might be able to check in early so to come back in a couple of hours. We were supposed to be staying in Little India but it wasn't and it looked and smelled a bit dodgy so we went for something to eat in a decent looking shopping centre and back to the hotel. Still not available so we sat in the lobby. 2 hours later (11.30) after we had both fallen asleep they relented and gave us a room which was lovely (22nd floor so I didn't go on the balcony) but it was an adjoining room - I opened the door to see what was behind it and came face to face with another guy as there were no locks!Slept most of that day and next day we walked up to the petronas towers for a look around and spent most of the afternoon on the hop on hop off bus seeing all the city landmarks which was great as because of where we were staying we weren't really liking KL. Decided to go down to the restaurant for dinner and were told we could only have room service even though there were only about 6 people in the restaurant - they'd been a bit off with us since we arrived presumably because we were on the cheap rate. Then we got a call to say they'd run out of my order (it was only 7.30) and when room service arrived they only brought one meal and we had to wait 15 minutes for the other one. So all in all not great service.
Following day we checked into a hostel and as the taxi pulled up in another dodgy looking street I was apologising to Jamie for picking it. However... when we got inside it was gorgeous, lots of outdoor wicker seating and immaculately clean. Reception were really helpful giving us maps showing where we were and making recommendations of what to see and do. They even took our bags to our room (and remember this is a hostel!) Room is spacious and clean with a very comfy bed and a wet room. Across the road is a carpark and leading off that a seven story shopping centre. It has Malaysia's largest indoor theme park with the biggest roller coaster I've ever seen, cinema, pool hall, arcades and several huge food courts. Had the most amazing chinese meal of pork dumplings, crispy belly of pork with noodle broth and proper sweet and sour pork which tasted nothing like you get at home.
A huge rain shower was looming so we went back to the hostel and watched our plasma tv (!) and then went about 5 minutes past the centre and came to Bintang Road which is where all the shops, bars, restaurants are. Had a drink at one of the outdoor bars and whiled away the time people watching then back to the hostel.
Next morning came down for breakfast (now bear in mind this hostel only costs us 5GBP a night each) and were asked if we wanted tea and coffee and to take a seat. I have never in my life been served breakfast in a hostel, it's usually a fight for the toaster and the last of the milk. Coffee was brought followed by cakes, massive chunks of watermelon then toasted sandwich, roti bread and mango chutney. Followed by top ups of coffee and watermelon. Didn't even have to do the washing up!
Headed down to Chinatown for some shopping and to try some street food. Visited a stunning hindu temple and did some haggling for shopping before heading to one of the food courts which had around 20 different street stalls and had some fantastic food for a couple of quid again. Booked a trip to Taman Negara via an eephant sanctuary which is where we're heading to next...
