Eilat is a great place, but it's like 20 degrees too hot, like we had trouble walking outside for more than 5 minutes. We had great fun though, as soon as we finished the kilometer walk from the bus stop with out giant backpacks in 43 degree heat. When we got to out hostel there was an elevator up to reception, and the 5 of us and our bags managed to get stuck inside. We quickly decided that in the event that we starved to death there, we would eat Arryn first.
Backtracking a moment, it seems customary to include one weirdo I met in every blog. Wacky weirdo #3 (after George and the Finnish guy from the last two blogs) is Alon, this guy we met at the bus stop, middle aged (which increasingly seems to be common of all weirdos, sorry mum), and way too friendly. The kind of friendly that makes u think, 'whats this guys angle'. He gave us detailed directions to our hostel, offered to get us into clubs for free, and offered to take me to his gym for free. I did call him, but hung up after remembering the number of times a nice guy has turned out to be a gay guy hitting on me (a gay motorcycle driver in tel aviv told me I should join the gay community, and an American gay guy took my number at a bar before I realised his motives).
On our first day we snorkeled, which for me meant overcoming a long-held fear of drowning, and of breathing underwater. We saw a battle to the death between some eels and some purty fishes!
Sidenote - we now have nicknames. Steven is red beard (his beard tuna red as it grows), Zac is blue beard (he has a thick beard, and attempted to dye his hair blue last week), I am no beard (coming up to two weeks without shaving and nothing but barely visible fluff to show for it), Arryn is the bush (his beard is bigger than him) and Gavin is el mexicano (his moustache is seedy and latino). We made a song about our names but typing it wont do it justice.
Some random funny things:
1) At Aroma espresso bar they asked for my name with my order, I said Aidan, and he wrote it down as Hayley. You're here in spirit Haylez!
2) There is a beach here called "Umm Rash Rash", which is a funny name. Nuff said.
3) We found a jeans store called jeansbar where you can order an alcoholic beverage while you peruse the jeans selection.
These things might not seem funny to you, but on minimal sleep and with sunstroke they're a real racket.
On the subject of sleep, I've had to develop a new sleep cycle to suit the early mornings and the night lfe which kicks off at 1am earliest. We now sleep whenever we can, ever. Any tiny window we take so we often sleep 2/3/4 times a day for a few hours. This is new to me, and I generally hate sleeping in the day, but by the end of this trip im going to be able to switch on an off like a lightbulb!
I don't want this to become too long, so I'll summarize the rest, even though its awesomeness warrants extensive detail. We hired a boat one afternoon, a circular boat, with speakers that you can plug an iPod into and a BBQ in the centre. We were provided with drinks and a huge 3 course meal including some big juicy steaks. We took it out into the middle of the red sea (which seems way to big for Moses to have split, good on him if (big if) he did.) We spent the day swimming by, and eating steak on, our circular boat, becoming The Knights Of The Meat Table!
We ended up going to sleep at 6:15am last night, with a 10am checkout time at the hostel for a reason I cannot share for about 2 weeks. All will be explained in time. Also, while walking home, as the sun came up, we found a section of boardwalk on fire. No Israelis seemed to care, so we played fireman and got rid of it. Put out a fire before breakfast... What did you do today?
After checkout we rolled off our beds and onto deck chairs at club hotel by the pool. Room 203 we told them.
Tomorrow in Greece!!!!!
