Well Washington DC...soo much to do!! Who knew it was famous for having loads of free museums?! Seeing as the museums all along the national mall were free we decided to do as many as possible!! We were up at 7.30am, skipped breakfast and headed straight for the old post office, an amazing building in which the surrounding area was particularly busy due to a charity run/walk event. We wondered through and kept going towards the far end of the mall, starting at the United States Capitol building. We took lots of photos of both the building and the view down the mall of the Washington monument. First place to open was the botanical gardens, a particular favourite of Harry's!! After we looked at all the unusual plants we decided it was time for breakfast... In the form if ice creams!! fully powered and ready to whizz through the museums we began with the national museum of the American Indian. The museum was full of all the traditional outfits American Indians used to wear, as well as descriptions of how these outfits related to their tribe names. The next Smithonian museum was the national air and space, probably one of if not the biggest museum there! Took us a bit longer to look around this one, was still really interesting though. The national art gallery west was the next building, we had a brief look but the artwork wasn't quite what we were expecting! A lot of history and people art which neither of us are overly interested in! We had a quick look in the Smithsonian Castle, amazing view from the outside! Natural history museum was next and this was probably our favourite, with a huge selection of extinct animals to see we spent quite a bit of time wondering around, taking lots of photos, finishing off with seeing the Hope diamond. We were getting pretty hungry by this point but decided we could have a quick look at the first ladies' dresses in the American history museum before lunch. There were a number of dresses, mainly from the past. Lunch was next then a walk up close to the Washington monument, the White House, the world war II memorial and finally the Lincoln memorial at the one end. The views were amazing from the Lincoln memorial, with a mass of water in front. As we had stuck to tight deadlines through the museum we had time to walk over to the Arlington cemetery, which actually involved us crossing into Virginia state. The cemetery is 600+ acres, the Arlington house sits at the top providing panoramic views of Washington DC, and you can even see the pentagon. With all of our challenges ticked off the list we decided to head back using the rail system. We grabbed our stuff from Duo hostel and found a 50c bus to get to the next hostel. The next one was Washington international student center. We realised on check in this was the worst hostel so far, so rapidly dumped our bags and went for dinner and drinks at a new bar open down the road . We didn't do much in the morning apart from book a couple things then hop in the car with Andy and Chris.
