After arriving in koh samui we hopped in a red taxi for a ride to Chaweng beach and our hotel. We bargained a price for the room then got ready quickly and made a beeline for the beach! It was stunning. Perfect white sand and bright blue sea! Just as we got onto the beach we were approached by a man with his monkey! Georgie was really excited so as it was her birthday I paid for her to have a photo holding the monkey. It was really cute, specially when it held her hand! After saying bye to our monkey friend, we found a spot, dumped our stuff then Georgie and I ran to the sea, while harry went to get some food. When we got out, we applied suncream then settled down for tanning time! I didn't last long before getting up to go to the shop to get water and sweets! When we got back from the shop we went back in the sea. As Georgie and harry were getting out of the water another monkey accompanied by an iguana this time came up to them! We all held both and took lots of photos. We stayed for a bit longer before going back to the hotel to have much needed showers. After getting ready we headed out to a nice restaurant for Georgie's birthday meal. They had really nice cocktails there and they were cheap so we had quite a few!! We all chose western type food tonight as we'd had enough of noodles and rice! The owner gave us each a free shot of sambucca to celebrate! Next, after some deliberation we went to a smart looking bar. We ordered a cocktail each and cherry flavoured shisha! We sat/ lay on a four poster bed, listening to the live music, drinking the cocktails and doing the shisha, for most of the night! The waitress organised for the band to sing happy birthday to Georgie and bought out a tiramisu pudding with candles on top. It was perfect birthday evening for George. All shattered as we hadn't had much sleep the previous couple days, we went to bed.
In the morning we got up and went to a cafe for breakfast, George and I had banana and chocolate pancakes, harry had scrambled egg with toast. Next stop, the beach! We found sunbeds where we set up camp for the day. The weather was perfect so we spent the day alternating between sunbathing, swimming in the sea or chilling in the pool of the hotel attached to the sunbeds! After the sun disappeared we went back to our hotel where we had showers and did some research for our next island. For dinner we decided to go back to a market we'd seen the previous night to try some cheap thai food. We all had a range of dishes and were really full after. We went shopping on the main road for an hour or so, then headed back to the hotel as we were pretty tired.
We started our last full day on koh samui pretty early, as we'd bought breakfast the previous night we ate it quickly in the hotel. Before heading out we booked our ferry for the next day to Koh Phangan. When we got to the beach it felt much hotter than the day before, although there were also quite a few more clouds. Again, we spent the day alternating between the sunbeds, pool and sea! Georgie and I had a drink each at the pool bar then went for a walk all the way to the far end of the beach. On the way back to harry and the sunbeds we got a bbq'd corn which was yummy. We went in the sea and did some puzzles before wondering back to the hotel for a nap. We went for dinner at the market again, trying different foods. Georgie was quite tired so decided to stay in. Harry and I went to find the black moon party, but failed so ended up walking around a lake, then to Chaweng beach road. We got crepes from here and topped up purchasing more suncream and after sun. When we eventually got back to the hotel it was quite late so we chatted for a bit then went to bed.
This morning we went for breakfast at a cafe then checked out of the hotel and waited to be picked up for the transfer to the ferry for koh phangan. Amazingly they were on time and it was a shorter ride to a different pier than we arrived into. The journey across to koh phangan was quick and when we got there we found our hostel pretty much straight away - with some help from Jamie (a friendly Scottish guy). Checked in, we sorted laundry and dropped it off then went to see the famous full moon beach. It was a lot smaller than we imagined, but the sand was pure white and really soft! After walking along this one we decided to try to find the other main beach - sunset beach. We thought we'd found it but after going back to the lazy house bar and speaking to Jamie we realised we had to go a bit further down the beach to see it properly! We had some drinks and snacks at the bar while watching a really funny film - the millers. By the time the film ended we'd missed sunset so went back to the hostel to get ready to go back out. We grabbed buckets of alcohol from a lady selling them on the way to the beach then sat drinking them at picnic tables outside cactus bar. Georgie and I played some drinking games then when we'd finished we went for a quick dinner just off the beach and came back after. When we got back they had entertainers spinning fire sticks around, we got some cocktails and watched them for most of the night. After they finished the bar had lots of games going on. First one, Georgie and harry did, where you had to stop people from popping a balloon tied around your ankle, whoever had the balloon left won! It was hilarious watching them hop around but both were out pretty quickly. Next game was arm wrestling, harry had a go but didn't beat the guy! Musical chairs was up next, which harry and I did. It didn't take long for me to be out, but harry came second after chasing the guy with the chair around the bar. Final game was fire limbo. None of us were very keen on the idea so sat and watched, until Georgie was dragged up to go under a couple times!! After the games had finished they turned the music up and we danced for the rest of the evening - stopping on the way back to get cheesy chips.
It was a late start on Friday morning due to the late night before. Harry got breakfast at the same place we'd eaten dinner (mama schnitzel) and we had fruit shakes. We then got the map out and headed for coconut beach, just over the hill. It was a short walk away to this secluded beach. We found three sunbeds and settled down! The beach was perfectly white and the sand was really soft. It was so peaceful and quiet. We walked along the pontoon to see if it was deep enough at the end to jump off. Unfortunately it looked really shallow so we didn't jump off the end. We took loads of photos on the pier, rope swing and in the water. We played games and just chilled for the rest of the afternoon. After putting our bags back at our hostel we headed down to sunset beach to watch the sunset. We found a good restaurant attached to coral bungalows, serving really good priced food. We decided to have dinner here then carried on up the beach to find a good spot to watch the sunset. A stray dog decided to join us for the walk along the beach, we called him Dings. We found some rocks to sit on and watched the sunset in the distance from there. After the sunset we walked back along the beach and into haad rin. When we were back booked our ferry to koh tao for two days time and got some money out a cashpoint. Back in the hostel we had showers and watched a film to make sure we didn't go out too early! When the film finished we headed straight to the beach. Harry had food while we had drinks. Then we walked up and down the main beach looking at all the different bars and watching the acts. I bought an ice cream on the way back to the hostel.
We got up really late on Saturday as both Georgie and harry wanted to lie in. When we eventually got up, we walked back to coral bungalows for breakfast. It was really cheap and tasty! We spent the rest of the day at the coral bungalows resort, sunbathing and using the pool. The three Israeli girls we'd originally met in koh samui were staying at the resort so we spent quite a big of time chatting to them! Later on we played card games while watching the sunset then had a yummy dinner at the resort. As we finished dinner the girls came to tell us about a fun bar next door, so we joined them in the tree house bar and had a drink. It was quite late by the time we left sunset beach so we went back to ours where we watched another film, then popped into town to get pudding. Georgie and I had amazing puddings, a sundae and waffles! We also bought snacks for the journey the next day, then went back to bed.
We were up early to get breakfast in koh phangan before we were picked up and taken to the pier. We had to wait in the rain for the ferry, then had a two hour journey across the sea to koh tao. We hopped in a taxi to Sairee beach then set about looking for somewhere to stay. After looking at quite a few we eventually found a good one called Wind Resort. Harry sorted a deal out and we checked in. Once settled into the room we went for a wonder around town. We stumbled across seashell restaurant which had 20% off everything, so we ordered drinks and a snack each. We spent the next few hours looking around, then had a nap before going out for dinner. Tong tree house restaurant was our dinner location. It had low tables so we sat on padded cushions on the floor to eat. We were at a table near the balcony so had nice views over the street. Our mains were nice, but the pudding Georgie and I shared was amazing - fried ice cream with a fruit salad!! It was quite late when we finished and we were all tired from the travelling earlier in the day soooo it was bed time!
Our first full day in koh tao started with harry and I going to get breakfast from 7/11 while Georgie saved us all sunbeds by the pool. We all ate breakfast by h pool and lay there for most of the day. We alternated between swimming and sunbathing all day. Georgie and I had fruit shakes later on then carried on sunbathing. At 5ish we were all quite hungry and stumbled across a place doing 20% off, so we each had a drink and a snack while looking out over the beautiful view. There was a little street market set up as we finished so we looked around there then went on a hunt for suncream. It took a while so when we'd bought some it was time for dinner! We went to a really cute restaurant in a tree house style, where we sat on the floor on the comfy cushions. The food was really nice and Georgie and I shared deep fried ice cream which was weird but yummy. We went to our hotel bar that evening for happy hour cocktails and to watch the fire performers. They were way better than the ones we'd seen on koh phangan so we stayed all night watching them, lying on mats on the wooden balcony thing at the edge of the bar.
In the morning we were up quite late so decided to go back to the place we'd had dinner the night before for brunch! After eating we set up camp on the beach for the day so that we could tan our backs more comfortably!! We didn't last long before going in the sea, where we met a funny dog called Bella and her owner Julie. We spent the rest of the day lying on the beach, going in the sea and pool. The sun seemed to disappear at 4ish so we decided to go for a walk to Mae head pier. We got most of the way then went for an ice cream and turned around. On the way back we found some nice cocktail places we thought we'd visit later. Back in Sairee village we booked our snorkelling trip for the next day and the bus back to Bangkok for the weekend. We went to the seashell restaurant for an early dinner as there was 20% off. Afterwards we went back to one of the bars further towards the pier. We had cocktails and watched the sunset. Unfortunately it was pretty cloudy so we couldn't see much of the sun actually setting! Georgie and I went on a pancake hunt but were unsuccessful so bought chocolate biscuits instead. We went to bed quite early knowing we were up early for our day trip.
This was the earliest we'd got up since being on the islands. We grabbed breakfast from 7/11 then were picked up from our hotel and taken to the pier. We clambered across several boats in order to get to the one we would be on for the day. Once onboard we were given snorkel masks. The sea was really choppy so the boat was all over the place and didn't seem overly sturdy!! Our first stop was at shark bay where we all jumped straight in the water eager to see some black tipped sharks. Unfortunately we didn't see any. Back on the boat we had tea and coffees on the way to the next stop. The next stop was at mango bay where we saw a lot more different types of fish and coral. When we got back on the boat there was fresh fruit waiting for us, which we ate lots of! The boat went the whole way round koh tao (turtle island), we had two more stops in bays I can't remember the names of. After one we had a nice lunch including rice, egg and a chicken mixture. The last snorkelling stop was deep enough for us to jump off the top of the boat, which we all did. We saw a huge fish this time which was camouflaged in leopard print! Back on the boat we went to the last stop of the day at Ngan Yuan Island. We were left there for two hours to explore the three mini islands, the coral and sunbath. The weather was much nicer over this side of the island so we enjoyed relaxing on a different beach. It was close to Sairee beach so didn't take long to get back to the pier. We sat on top of the boat with our new friends rose and Beatrice. Taxi's were waiting for us when we got back to take us back to our hotels. We arranged to meet the girls later in the bar to go for dinner. The three of us had showers, chilled and applied aftersun to our burnt bits! We met the girls in the bar then walked to a thai restaurant harry had seen the previous night. The food was really nice, and it was fun having more people to eat with! We had drinks at the hotel bar after, still chatting lots. At 10pm we all went to watch the Queens Cabaret - a ladyboy show! It was hilarious and we couldn't believe how pretty they were! A highlight of the night was when we got harry up to do the finale, the ladyboys provided him with a wig and bikini top. Him and several other guys from the audience then danced to the music, accompanied by the lady boys. After the show we took photos with them and said bye to rose and Beatrice. We saw someone with a pancake on the way back to our hotel, so we went to find the pancake man! He was really funny to watch, particularly chopping the bananas and the pancakes were really yummy!
In the morning we got up quite late so all the sunbeds by the pool were taken. Harry set up camp on the beach while Georgie and I went to get us all breakfast. We chilled on the beach and in the pool until sunbeds came available then we moved to the pool area for the rest of the day. Just as the sun started to set Georgie and I went to a beachfront spa to have some treatments. Georgie had a manicure, choosing bright orange nail varnish and I had a massage. The massage was slightly more active than I expected, as she walked up and down me, bending me into all sorts of positions. After we'd finished it had started raining quite heavily. We decided to go to a restaurant nearby, in the end we went to the tree house one we'd already been to a couple of times, because we liked the food so much. We each tried different things than last time and shared pineapple fritters for pudding. It was still raining a lot when we finished so we decided to go back to the hotel and watch a film.
It was an early start to our final day on koh tao as we wanted to top up our tans before going home. We got prime positions by the pool then went to get breakfast from 7/11. We spent the day similarly to the last few; sunbathing and swimming in the pool. Later in the afternoon the sun disappeared and it started to go cloudy, so we went shopping for a few bits. We didn't actually end up buying anything though, apart from ice coffees - which we wished we'd found earlier in the week!! For dinner we ended up going back to the tree house, for the third time, the food was just too nice! We all chose different dishes again, all Asian style curry/rice dishes. They had a delivery of bananas in that evening, which the owner was happy to tell us, so Georgie and I shared banana fritters. At the end of the meal he shook our hands and we had an emotional goodbye! We spent the rest of the evening wondering around the shops an finishing off buying our last banana and Nutella pancakes.
In the morning we got up quite early to check out, then leave our bags at the reception. We went for a leisurely breakfast at the seashell resort restaurant, so we had a nice view of beach and sea. After breakfast we picked up a few snacks for the journey then sat outside the hotel playing card games. Harry went to get us all iced coffees then we carried on playing until 1 ish. I then went to get us all pad thai from a street stall for lunch. We ate the pad thai and waited for our taxi to pick us up and take us to the boat - it was late as per usual! Once we got there the boat was no where to be seen so we got our tickets then Georgie and I ran off to get banana and Nutella pancakes as she'd seen them for a really good price!! When we got back the boat still wasn't there. When it eventually arrived we saw a familiar face in Fran from our New Zealand trip, she'd just come from koh phangan, so we had a quick chat then got on the boat. The journey to Bangkok started, it took forever and every mode of transport was late so it was a miracle we got to Bangkok on time. We got a taxi to our hostel where luckily we could check in. We had a nap and breakfast, then Georgie and I went to the airport so she could get on the plane home. We had a last meal of sticky rice and mango, wishing we'd had it more often as it was so nice! George left through the departure point and I made my way back to the hostel via the airlink and bts. Very impressed I remembered how to get back, I rewarded myself with a nap as I was shattered from lack of sleep on the overnight bus. When we woke up, we walked to MBK shopping mall, it was huge so we spent all afternoon and into the evening shopping there. We bought our last few bits including a few presents and some tops for ourselves. We had dinner there before attempting to get a tuk tuk back. The tuk tuk tried to take us to his 'sponsors shop' so we could spend money, so we got out and didn't pay - that did mean we had to walk for about 20 mins in the pouring rain!! Apparently this happens quite frequently though so we were lucky it hadn't happened before! Once back at the hotel we had showers and packed our bags ready for the flight the next day.
We had to get up really early for our flight to Singapore and really appreciated the free breakfast at the hostel. We got the bts to mo chit station and then a taxi to the airport, which worked out the quickest and most cost effective way to get there. Once we checked in, I posted a postcard and we went through the international departure security. We had quite a while to spend shopping in the airport and spent ages working out how to use our last thai baht. At 10am we then boarded the plane to Singapore!
