Fat Freddy's Drop
I just realized that I've almost been gone a month now, it has gone by so quickly. Today is my last day off of my three day weekend before starting 12 hour shifts 6 days a week, it is going to be exhausting. I'll make good money though and I'm kind of used to it from working two jobs at home, but this job is way more tiring. It has been a nice weekend, I was pretty much alone for most of it since Amanda was working and out of town at night, so I took a bike ride, took a walk, and went to the beach a lot. I've decided I'm going to really learn how to relax here, not think about time or things I need to do…which is nothing anyway.
Last night was so much fun, I had an amazing time! My best night in Australia so far! I went to the Fat Freddy's Drop concert at Old Broadwater Farm, which is basically in the back of a neighborhood, a stage sits in the middle of a grass lawn about the size of a big backyard and there are a few beer and food stalls. A really cool venue. It reminded me a lot of the Umphrey's McGee concert I went to a couple summers ago at White River Park, exactly the same set up…and similar people haha. Shirtless hippies with long dreadlocks, sunglasses and board shorts dancing around the lawn to the reggae vibe, the evening breeze tinged with patchouli, sweat and other herbal essences. So I meet up with Louis and Drew, my New Zealand buddies from work (Feat Freedy as the kiwis say, is a really popular New Zealand band). I was so happy to have people to hang out with, I know that sounds pathetic but it is so hard to meet people here without a car or anything nearby. Louis and Drew are super nice, really easy to talk to and I had so much fun with them, it was great to meet some of their friends from Margaret River too. Hopefully I'll get to hang out with them outside of work again soon. So I sipped some crap wine from a plastic bottle and swayed with the sound waves drifting into sunset. I kind of lost everyone for awhile since it was dark so I squeezed past the crowd to the front of the stage and jammed for awhile. The band was so good, totally mellow but charged with energy and the singers voice was so smooth, the kind of songs that keep humming in your head and just make you want to smile and dance. I was definitely smiling all night, awesome band, great new friends and a good buzz. I found everyone again and we hung out in the parking lot for a while, a girl shared her Champaign with me so we chugged some from the bottle, always classy of course. Amanda told me before I left that taxis are pretty unreliable here so I was expecting it to take a long time to get one, if we got one at all. After waiting awhile we started walking to the main street through the dark neighborhood culdesacs, it was pretty funny I thought. I was pretty sure where what direction to go and everyone just followed me like I knew haha, good thing I ended up being right after about a half hour walk. I just remembered I had a dream like that a few months before I left except Janna and I were walking around in this pristine neighborhood in Australia on a sunny day and she was freaking out that we were lost but I thought it was funny that kangaroos kept bouncing down the street and I told her she needed to chill out. Ha that's funny, kind of came true but a little different. Anyway Loius, Drew and I talked about the most random stuff on our walk, I have no idea, I just remember something about eating caterpillars and building a tent since we were lost and never going to get out of the neighborhood. It felt so good outside in my tank top and it was a nice walk besides not knowing where exactly we were going. We made it to the main street though, found a taxi and I went home. Fat Freddy played the background music of my dreams and I woke up singing. It was such an awesome night, I've been happy all day today thinking about it.
I slept late this morning, took a bike ride and went to the beach and that's about it. I'm getting hungry since I haven't eaten much today. I'm totally out of food and feel bad that I keep stealing pieces of bread and vegemite (about the only food in the house) from my roommate. I really hope she comes back soon and we can go to the grocery store before it closes tonight.Otherwise I will be stealing more couscous.
