Arrived at Don Mueang airport at 7.30am, both feeling really tired and hungry. Our flight to Phuket isn't til 11.45 so we're just reading and waiting to finally see the South of Thailand!
Landed at Phuket and were told you could get a taxi, air conditioned minibus or take the airport bus to Phuket town to catch the ferry across to Ko Phi Phi Don. Getting outside the airport we were confronted with so many taxi drivers quoting 500 baht to the ferry. We found a minibus asking for 100 each but gave up on them when they made us wait until the bus was full before they'd leave! We waited almost 30mins before I went off to find the airport bus instead (tourist info couldn't tell us the timetable and said it would be a long wait) I found the bus which was cheaper at 85 baht and was definitely leaving in 10 mins!
On the way to Phuket town we saw so many rubber plantations and tall jungle covered mountains, I can see why it's become such a tourist destination. Unfortunately, most of Phuket has been ruined by tourism with Patong beach being a no go for anyone not looking to pick up a lady boy or night walker.
Arriving at the ferry port there were several companies selling tickets for the boat but no real choice as they were all selling the tickets at exactly the same price! Even bartering didn't work, we bought an open return ticket to Ko Phi Phi which will let us also get the boat to Railay when we leave.
An hour or so later we arrived at Tonsai Bay, Phi Phi Don- wow…so many people and about 4 tourist info booths all selling accommodation and tours, but the guesthouses were the same price wherever you looked! We were shocked at the change in price from Chiang Mai to here, rooms started here at 600 baht with only a fan, an a/c room started at 900 baht! I managed to barter our bungalow with a/c down from 1000 to 850 baht and we stayed at Garden Inn. It's a nice room with an enormous bed and wet room bathroom (they all have these out here) and our own balcony with hammock.
There are so many cats here and loads of kittens. I keep letting them into our room for some water and to cool down, they're all so hot and skinny looking.
For dinner we spotted a huge wooden boat that had been made into a restaurant all lit up by fairy lights! It acts as a tsunami safe place as it's so high and there are signs all over the island showing evacuation routes. I was still feeling a bit delicate and not ready for more Thai food so bailed out by ordering pizza.
We saw toads basking in the streetlight and catching all the flies and bats too, all on the walk back to our room.
