Sarah's Travels
So there I was back in Perth at One World Backpackers and it felt like coming home. Thats the thing about OWB once you have been you never want to leave. If you manage to drag yourself away ya just can't wait to go back! But it was my last time and was only for two nights before the start of my road trip up the west coast to Broome. The day came to finally leave OWB and I had to say goodbye to old friends, finish off the amazing chocolate cake, pack up the car, not forget my travelling companion Marc (well it was his car!) and hit the road. First stop was a place I had visited before - Cervantes and the Pinnacles. Marc had not seen these wonderful limestone rocks yet so we made a quick stop before heading to a place called Jurien to stop for the night.
Day two and we headed to Geraldton via Dongara/Port Dennison which had not much going for it except a nice sunset over the bayand it was a useful place to stop for the night and stock up on supplies. Day three and things were getting a bit more interesting. We visited the Hutt River Province. For those that were originally like me and have no idea of the significance of this place, I'll briefly explain. The Hutt River Province is an independent sovereign state 595km from Perth and is about 75 square km in size. It seceded from Australia on 21 April 1970. It has its own currency, military, postal system and its own monarchy - Prince Leonard and Princess Shirley. If you still don't believe me have a look at their website! We spent the night in Kalbarri and the following morning we explored some of the beautiful Kalbarri NP.
The journey from Kalbarri got a lot less interesting and the gaps between seeing signs of life became longer. The next stop was Denham the township supporting the resort of Monkey Mia where you are able to get up close to Dolphins. If you make it along the 130km road off the high way to get to Denham it is well worth a visit. The town itself is a pretty seaside area with great fishing (so I'm told), but the main attraction is the dolphins at MM. You have to get there early as the dolphins decide when its feeding time. They come in to be fed three times a day and always in the morning. It was an amazing experience as two of the dolphins still had their young with them.
Then it was a long drive to Exmouth. Here the idea was to do a boat trip out over the Ninagloo Reef and maybe do some swimming with Whale Sharks, but the weather turned on us and it became too windy and the sea became much too rough and we decided to gave it a miss. We instead headed inland to the Cape Range NP. If the weather hadn't been so windy I could have found a secluded beach in the NP and enjoyed the Turquoise water all day long.
After Exmouth we started our final push to Broome. We had a couple of stops on the way, one night in Karratha where we got to see the 'stair way to the moon' which only happens on the nights when there is a full moon. As the moon raises the reflection over land and water creates the effect of a stairway leading to the moon. We had one final stop at Eighty Mile Beach and then it was 'Broome Time'!
So 3812kms, 10 days, and a lot of fuel later we made it without killing each other or crashing the car (although came close thanks to some Kangaroos!)
Now its time to relax and chill out on the beach, enjoy a camel ride and prepare for my next journey to Sydney and then on to NZ.
Hope your all well and enjoy looking at the photos,
Love
