Romania. According to all the drivers that would pick us up Romania is the last place two backpackers should visit let alone hitchhike in.
ROMANIA IS BAD BECAUSE: Romania has gypsies. Romania is poor. Romania is a former communist country. Romania had one of the most brutal regimes during communist times and people disappearing in the night was not unheard of. So its not a nice place to visit.
I was nervous about hitchhiking in Romania and just walking down the street. It didnt help that we got to the Hungarian Romanian border well past sunset. As we walked across the border we approached a border control office. I asked for a bus. At this point I was on high alert. Sylvia was too. During a hitchhike through Hungary we got a ride from a Polish truck driver. The guy was so against us going to Romania he told us he would take us to Budapest instead.
So we ask the border patrol employees about a bus going into the town of Satu Mare. Sorry! Buses dont run there. I was not looking forward to camping on the side of the road at this point. I explained the situation a little to the people and asked if there was a campsite nearby or any other way to get to Satu Mare. After some thought the guy offered us a ride in his own personal vehicle, we would just have to wait for a bit. Cool we took it.
On the Ride into Satu Mare we were talking to the guy trying to figure out what cities were nice to visit and everything like that. At one point he began to tell us that Romania is such a nice place to visit, no problems and little crime. It was sounding so good. When we arrived at our destination and he began to slow the car down he turned to me and very seriously said, "This is very important. The number for the police is 9292". SAY WHAT!!! How can you go on and on about how nice a place is and right before dropping some people off say that to them. Guard was up. The campsite was ghetto. We walked around and around looking for an office or something but we couldnt find a thing. The campground was actually just a big field.
On one end of the field we found a bar. Sylvia began asking them about the camp ground and a young girl led us down the street to another bar. I was the first to enter and upon entering all eyes turned towards the door. Inside the room there were some tables with some rough looking guys sitting around vodka bottles. I walked up to the counter and asked the girl if she spoke english. She rolled her eyes and said something in Romanian to four guys sitting at one of the tables. They all started laughing and saying things in Romanian. Hyenas. Keep it up! Finally when things quited down a bit one guy asked what were looking for. We told him the office to the campground...blah, blah, blah. They had nothing to tell us. When we left the place I was a little ticked because Sylvia told them we were going to be camping in the field. I was thinking ahead, not trusting anyone. The last thing I wanted was some drunk guys coming to look for us in the middle of the night.
As we walked back to the campground we ran into a drunk guy. I asked him about an office and a place to shower. He took us on a trip, along the way we ran into an older German couple. I was occupied with the drunk but Sylvia was talking to the German couple. The Germans had the same problem as us but they found another campsite that was a little more secure and legit a block away. At this point the drunkard was taking me into some sort of recreation building to see about the showers. On the way he got into an argument with one of the employees but the guy was so drunk and belligerent the employee just shut his flapper. He led me to a large out door pool. Next to the pool were the showers. I entertained him and thanked him and began to try to walk back out to the front with Slyvia and the Germans but the guy began to tell me he wanted me to jump in the shower... he was drunk. I just walked away and to the front of the building.
