So after a bumpy and windy 6 hour bus journey we finally arrived in Vang Vien, we found a cheap hostel and decided to go and explore as we did not know too much about the place. The place was essentially the backpackers capital of the world. Everything was aimed at backpackers and if the town lost this there would be nothing there apart from some pretty impressive views, like the one shown in the photo atatched. We had decided to stay here in Vang Vieng for three nights as we needed a couple of days to sort our Vietnam visas.
We decided to go straight out and have a coupled of beers but in the first bar we got too we were offered a drugs menu before a drinks menu with things like mushroom shakes and opium tea, it was crazy. Pretty much the majority of people in Vang Vieng either did drugs or got drunk, or both. My mum and dad will be pleased to know I just opted with the getting drunk part. Our first night was fun getting two free buckets of Whiskey and Lemonade each at smile bar and playing beer pong with some swedish guys, Fredrick, Ambrose and Andreas. The next day we were going to go trekking but we were both a little hungover from the night before and decided to chill out, I found somewhere which sold beans on toast which I was desperatly missing. We chilled out for the rest of the day, most of the restaurants had friends, south park or family guy constantly showing so it was nice to have a bit of lazy time. We bumped into Isa and Helenea again the two German girls who had also gone to Vang Vieng the same day as us, but after they were off back to Bangkok the next day so this would be the last time we would see them. Me and Earl went on to smile bar again where we played some more beer pong with the swedish guys we had made friends with the day before. We made plans to meet these the next day and go tubing, which is essentially a bar crawl down a river visiting each pub, playing drinking games and pretty much getting very drunk. The swedes never turned up, i can only think this was because they were too hungover or because they did not want to get beat again at beer pong. We made our own way there and had a cracking time drinking whiskey buckets, beers, playing new rinking games such as flip cup and earl joined in on the whiskey train. We also herd about a slide called the slide of death which apparently has claimed a few lives as you are unable to control your landing and the water can be pretty shallow, luckily for us we didn't make it that far down the river and opted to stay at Why not bar and jump off the platform there.
This is also the day of one of my most embarrasing stories, of which there is quiet a few but luckily only me and Earl know about this one. It's not a story for the faint hearted so I will leave out the details but it ended with me having to chuck one of my pair of shorts.
So that pretty much sums up our time in Vang Vieng, I would recommend it anyone who wants a bit of a get drunk kind of holiday. It is like Malia and Magaluf but without the hassle of PR's and much cheaper.
