Adam and Charlotte's Great Escape.
Hello to you all from the land where sheep out number people.
It has been a while since we last wrote a postcard so let us tell you about our week. Last Tuesday we went on a glacier trip up Franz Josef which was certainly a memerable experience. This is the steepest glacier in the world which can be commercially guided on. Wrapped up warm and in our hiking boots that we borrowed we set off for the glacier; due to it being low season there we only for people in our group which was nice. We had to walk 40 minutes over streams and rocks to get to the foot of the ice. Here we met our guides and put crampons on which had ten spikes on each foot which grip the ice and help stable you. First we started climbing the ice staircase which has to be recarved each morning, the first obstacle was when we had to squeeze between two sheets of ice that were three storeys high. Adam got a bit stuck but he managed to slip through by literally hugging the ice. However, the most difficult part was crawling through a small tunnel. Adam had to army crawl through it and got soaking wet, where as I penguin shuffled through and stayed dry; this is one occasion where being small is good. Apart from this we managed to stay upright for the entire trip so our bums stayed nice and dry. After all the trudging up we came to an area that was open and realtively flat where we had lunch surrounded by peaks of ice. In the afternoon we explored the middle section of the glacier and because of the movement of the glacier it changes everyday so the guide is looking for new and interesting things to show you. After this it was a case of heading back the way we came. We were certainly aching the next day but the trip was outstanding.
We left Franz Josef on Wednesday morning and headed for Greymouth which was a realitively boring town. However, on our way to Greymouth we stopped to have a look at the Hokitika gorge, it had very blue water because it comes from the glaciers.
Well that is it for now, we will write another postcard soon.
Love Ad and Charl xx
P.S we are having trouble putting the pictures on, the photo on this postcard is of a different glacier and will change when our pictures are on here.
