The highlight of today is Glacier Bay. This national park is a world heritage site and was up until about 250years ago was a huge glacier. As the glacier has melted, a large elongated bay has formed with many tributary glaciers still remaining. The huge rivers of ice, with cliff edges facing the bay were really impressive. Margery glacier, the largest of the three we went close to, is over a km wide, with 250m of ice above the water level and another 100m below. It moves about 2.5 m a day, with ice continually breaking off and dropping into the water below, creating a mass of floating ice. Spectacular.
Tiny icebergs were floating in the water surrounding the ship.
Rangers from the park boarded the ship and gave lectures about the park and the subsistence living by the traditional inhabitants of the park.
As the ship left the bay and made its way north, for the first time during the trip, we were in the open sea.The slight swell produced a rocking motion in the ship, that felt a bit like being drunk.
After dinner we went to a great show "British Invasion" that was a singing and dancing performance of iconic UK music from the 60's - 80's. Then it was on to a party to celebrate the cruise lines 50th anniversary. There is always food, music and drink available, regardless of the time. Diet starts in two days time.
