Gosh yesterday was huge, noticed that today when we rose, felt like just curling up and sleeping again as silly me stayed up working also, so made my day extra big.
What did get us moving was the excitement of seeing the Amalfi Coast and Positano…………but that didn't last, we were advised that unfortunately the currents where we were going to land at Amalfi was too dangerous, so the Captain had to reposition the ship and ended up in Salerno port still on the Amalfi coast but too far away for a Positano visit that we had planned at lunchtime for the afternoon.
Instead we joined the Mozzarella from Farm to Table tour, where we travelled to a private farm in Campania, a region acclaimed for its diary heritage and renowned for producing Italy’s finest mozzarella cheese. For more than three centuries, water buffalo have fed on the rich patches of grass nestled in the land between Amalfi Coast and the mountainous interior. We arrive at a diary farm in the town of Pontecagnano, to see the insightful journey into the timeless art of cheese making, where we enjoyed demonstrations of techniques passed down from generations as mozzarella formed in the hands of skilled culinary artisans. Afterwards we join the owner of the farm to see his herd of 600 buffalo, and enjoy in their private villa, exclusive tasting and plenty of stories about farm life, cheese making and the allure of the Italian countryside. I’ve never tasted such fresh mozzarella! It was melt in your mouth mozzarella! Mmmmm.
It was just the perfect day for recovering from such a big day the day before. We arrived back to the boat just after lunch, Mum relaxed on the ship whereas Dad and I had a stroll into the port of Salerno, the history of the city is mostly recognized for the old University of Medicine, first in the world.
We are enjoying Azamara for the long stays in port, it really does make a difference to being able to see more and explore the ports/towns. I’ve already decided if I was to travel again on a cruise I’d choose this company, everyone is so nice, passengers too, a real mix of passengers – international totally. It’s not too big but not too small.
