We woke today with the Captain advising it was a little rough and he'd be taking a different route to what was planned and it should be much better around midday. The swell was about 2.5 to 4 metres. After a smooth sail in the inside passage, it was noticeable once we hit the open waters.
We spent the morning sleeping in - which was nice and then repacked bags etc.
Just after lunch we ventured into the crown jewel of coastal Alaska - Prince William Sound. Past Cape Hinchinbrook where Sea Otters and Harbor Seals are known to be found in the waters, Mum and I were sure we saw Sea Otters bobbing in the water, as you could not only see the heads but their bellies and paws.
The weather in Prince William Sound can be extremely unpredictable, we had fog when we ventured into College Fjord but then the sun came out and let us view the many glaciers. Right at the end of the College Fjord we were able to see three Glaciers in total view – Yale, Harvard and Smith. As you can probably guess by the names the glaciers are all named after well known colleges.
The Captain did a 360 turn in front of the glaciers, then as he made his way out, we ventured down to the stern of the boat on our cabin level – there we stood on the open deck to see the grandeur of all the Glaciers to ourselves – we found the deck when we were doing the laundry a few days before situated at the back of the boat – it was our secret viewing area. The sun came out long enough to see the Chugach Mountains behind the glaciers also.
We could hear the sound of muted thunder seeming to be miles away, they call that an ice quake, caused by the shifting and grumbling inside the glacier, and it did seem to follow with calving shortly after – collapsing massive icebergs into the water at the face.
We’ve never seen so many Glaciers in one area and we were told in Alaska there are thousands.
In Alaska a lake is only called a lake if a float plane can be landed on it.
Dinner was really late because we’d spent so much time on the decks taking in all the scenery and watching for whales.
Today was our last day on the ship, it was rather sad to see the end of the cruise.
We travelled from Vancouver to Whittier, total distance - 1479 nautical miles.

Anony Mouse So many new entries but fortunately so much time on my hands. So tonight I am going to close to no work at all whilst I read them all. So far I really like the view from the cabin. The glacier in the background looks quite nice as well.

abeliwasierisaw You'd love Alaska! The place reminds me of when we went up to the Artic Pole, add the National Park in Denali and it's like going to Tasmania. I would like a few more days here to do all the walks. Amazing scenery, really early morning 7am start to join the Big Five Wilderness Tour inside the Denali Park with the Athabaskan guide. I'm looking forward to calling you tomorrow night end of the week, to catch up. xx
J & C Excellent pics!
