Surprisingly, Wilmington ended up being one of our favourite places in the whole of the United States. So in all honestly, the reason we made the trek there was due to a Dawson's Creek obsession I (Sarah) had about 10 years ago. And yeah, still have now. They filmed it there, so walking around downtown was like walking through Capeside, it was awesome. We had originally planned to stay for 3 days, but ended up extending it to a week because it was this very cute little riverside town, we loved it. Especially after being in cities for the past month.
In relation to Dawson's Creek - we ate at the Icehouse where we met "Dawsey" (more about that later), got our hair cut at Screenplay Video where Dawson and Pacey used to work after school, we saw Capeside High, walked along the riverfront where many of the more emotional scenes were shot, Dimario jumped in the fountain where Pacey and Andy had their first kiss, we saw the wall that Pacey bought for Joey (and Sarah had to pose in front of 15 times), we saw the wooden steps where Joey said "It's just hairspray! And it's just makeup!" when Dawson was being an arse. We told all the townspeople how we were there because of Dawson's Creek, I (Jess) denied it at first but eventually gave in to the incredible lure of Dawson's Creek, and they told us stories about when filming was going on.
Let me tell you, the Wilmington night life was happening. Almost as good as the 'Gong. We went out a couple of times, mostly because drinks were really, really cheap. Like a buck for a beer! Anyway, whilst out we developed a hobby of watching the basketball with subtitles because they say some things that just sound wrong ("He's in the inside rim!"). We went to Hell's Kitchen, which is where Joey and Audrey worked for like the entire last 2 seasons. The beer was cheap, but Jess thought the vodka "tasted awful". But we still went back again. We got drunk at the 'Icehouse', which is actually the Dockside Restaurant, and met our waiter, who we dubbed Dawsey due to his Dawson looks but Pacey attitude. He made me (Sarah) drink an Irish car bomb because it was St Pat's day, but I spat it all over the table and he had to clean it up (we'll upload a video). He made up green cocktails for Jess. We thought he loved us but then he broke our hearts and moved on to another table. We'll never forget you Dawsey. Later that night we got drunk with some marines and went and jumped in various fountains along the riverfront. And we made a marine wear lip gloss. Another video we need to upload. Oh yeah! We got given beef jerky by a (female) taxi driver. Strange. That was a good day.
We spent a great deal of time searching for the right kind of dock to sit on and look pensive, a la Dawson, but never found it. We even took a day trip to Wrightsville Beach and still didn't find it. Disappointing, but such is life.
Overall we didn't really do much - we wandered around and looked at all the little shops and things, but we pretty much relaxed for the week. It was awesome. One day we layed in bed all day and watched reality shows about rich peoples weddings. Awesome. Oh one more thing - I discovered Bojangles chicken. So, so awesome. We made a game of counting how many honks, whistles, waves etc. we got while we were waiting for the bus. It was funny at first, but then we got a bit over it. Aaah, the price you pay for looks... but really, it was ridiculous and a bit creepy.
Next stop.... Nashville! What a barrel of laughs!
