So here is my St Johns post.
I left Toronto super early on Thursday morning to get to the airport - left Jess behind for a few days. Flight went fairly smoothly and I arrived in St Johns at about midday. It was awesome, but it was COLD. I just wandered around a bit for the first day, then I met some girls who were staying in my (very, very nice, and very, very cheap) hostel, and we went up to a museum called 'The Rooms', which was cool. They had an actual life jacket from the Titanic, which was a bit of a thrill. They also had a bunch of archives, so I could look up a bit about my family (which was a bit difficult, seeing as there were about 50 million Squires on the island), so that was also cool.
On the Friday I got to meet some of my family - my Mum's cousin's and Aunty, and some of their kids. It was really nice to meet them all, and they were all very welcoming and very sweet (and are probably reading this now, hehe). I'm really glad I got to meet them, hopefully we'll meet again (they need to save their pennies - or 'loonies and toonies' - and get to Australia!). Michele took me to my first WALMART! Very exciting! And I tried some authentic Newfoundland cuisine - 'fish and chips with dressing and gravy'. Awesome.
On Friday night I went out to an Irish pub with the girls from my hostel and had too much to drink - but didn't spend too much money because there was a guy there who wanted me to come to his house for "pea soup and dough balls" - so free drinks all night. Woohoo!
Saturday was pretty eventful - I got the bus (on my own, quite a feat) to a mall and then got back on my own, having to walk back to the hostel in a snow storm. IT WAS FREEZING. I was walking in snow up to my knees - i've seen enough snow for the rest of my life. It apparently wasn't a bad storm, but it was enough for me.
On Sunday I got up super early again to get my flight, only to find it was delayed for five hours due to the storm, so that was lot's of fun. But I finally made it back to Toronto, and in time for my bus to Boston, so yay for me! The trip there was pretty unexciting - I had a quick stoppover in Montreal where everyone was talking to me in French and I had no idea what they were saying.
Then back safe and sound with Jess on Monday morning. More about Boston in the next post...
