Henry Well, I did a cruise tguorhh the Panama Canal and that part of the cruise was fascinating. It took all day to go tguorhh the canal locks, then the lake and tguorhh the next set of locks. Very cool indeed. So if your excursion actually goes tguorhh a lock or if you can see another ship going tguorhh the locks, then I think that would be a great excursion.

Aland Your blog made good reading, you've caught the local color and culture exactly right. The hotel in Kuala Lumpur where I was staying arranged for a guided tour of this city. It was a little expensive but hassle free.

Aunt Kevyn Dears - I just read and caught up after some time at sea, sic. Sounds like Japan was a hit. When you reflect on how persons in different Asian countries meet and greet you, perhaps history can give some clues. And don't forget that Japan is the only Asian country that we have formally defeated in armed combat! I'm glad that you felt welcome there. By the time you read this, you've been days more at sea, and the end is in sight. I can't wait to see you two again when our paths cross, and to hear more. Kim Hey, girl. I sent a letter to you in Hong Kong, but I'm guessing you didn't get it. Sadness. :( I'm sure it will find its way back to me in the next bunch of weeks. Just wanted to let you know that my mom and I will be in LA for a night before going to Australia (we arrive around lunchtime on Sunday, May 25 and depart at 9 pm on Monday, May 26). Kyla Still expecting you on the 22nd. What time do you get in? Do you want to call me when you get in? Do you want to do a circle tour of the island or hit a beach and hang out with the kids? I usually go to a bible study on Tues morning, you are welcome to go. It is a special program on the Jewish passover feast and its significance to Christians. Mostly military wives, but fun and food. We can also go to a great pool in Waikiki for military, it is also right on the beach. Give me some idea of times and what you want to do. I will try to make it happen for you. Pearl Harbor tour is a possibility as well.

Scott Helfrich Amanda and Noah, It sounds like you have been having a wonderful timedoing some serious site thinking. As a former SAS person, I can complete relate to your journey. I also wanted to let you know that Danielle gave birth to our first child, Liam Scott Helfrich. He weighed in at 8.5 lbs. and 21.5 inches long. Enjoy the rest of the trip - it will fly. Noah Yes, there is a LOT of shopping. Folded sarees don't take up too much space though and most of the shopping I do is just for postcards and snacks. Let's see if we're wooed by Vietnam to buy a lot of cheap electronics. There are 700+ students on the ship and a full complement of professors. So everyone has a full class schedule, with most classes having fewer than 20 students. There are A days and B days, but we ignore the days of the week -- so there are classes on weekends if that's when we're on the ship. The only class everyone takes is Global Studies, which is supposed to be a survey course, taught by the entire faculty, about the countries we're visiting. Amanda and I go every day. The whole ship community, other than crew, is supposed to be there. But the students howl like scalded cats when the faculty makes the outrageous demand that they, college students, attend a class. They don't come, they don't do the readings, and then they complain the tests are too hard. Admittedly, the Dean, who sort of emcees the class, doesn't have the friendliest personal style. So when students ask stupid questions like "Who won the Vietnam War" he tells them "that's a stupid question and you should be ashamed of yourself for not knowing the answer." These kids, spoiled rich little s***s mostly, have been coddled their whole lives by parents and teachers so they hate the Dean. To them, this justifies their decision to ignore the class and then complain that it's not teaching them anything. Sorry for venting, but I'm kinda cheesed about this stuff. I actually like most of these kids. I just can't handle the whining.

Kevyn I'm not surprised that cruising allows more space than flying, but where on earth are you putting the 'shopping' I hear about in nearly every blog? Having joined late, you may have covered my question many nautical miles ago: is there a reg schedule of classes that your students share, on board or on land, or is the travel and reflections on same the content for them? Are you responsible for any students as you cruise the sights and markets? Love at Easter, Kevyn
