We have been at Lake Bunyoni for the past few days. Unfortunately, cold weather. Africa is not supposed to be cold. I looked into these things, but the long-sleeved shirt and jacket didn't seem to be enough layers at this elevation. The views were incredible though. Lake Bunyoni is a crater lake, formed from volcanoes. There are several islands all over the lake, making for picturesque scenery.
To get to our accommodations, we needed to row a boat across the lake. We stayed in a geodome, where there's essentially no front on the hut so you wake up to views of the lake. I wake each morning to the sun peaking over the distant islands. All the water is still; the birds are singing. The site is eco-friendly, so we have no electricity and use lanterns in the evenings. Meals take a very long time to be prepared, so we have learned to order our dinner right after lunch, and ask for it to be ready at a specified time. Otherwise, you're on Africa time!!
You must pay to have water heated for a shower. I didn't the first time and learned my lesson! The worst shower experience of my life!! Very cold outside, with freezing water and drafts in the shower stall. I only made it through the shampooing phase of my shower, decided to forego the conditioning phase, and made a mad dash for the bed. I had to lie under a pile of blankets for about a half hour to melt a little. :)
We will make our way to Kisoro tomorrow, then venture to Rwanda!!
