Too Cold For Penguins
Hi Everyone!
Hope you're all well! We've been quite busy since the last postcard. We gave up our campervan in Cairns last week and then it rained solidly for the rest of our time there so we didn't do much else, but we did manage to take a diving trip out to the Great Barrier Reef which was awesome! We saw a giant turtle and a moray eel so we were quite lucky! Ben especially enjoyed sticking his hand in a giant clam and stroking a cucumber. Personally I liked the giant turtle and moray eel.
We left Cairns on Sunday and flew to Alice Springs where there was no rain but it was flippin hot. We spent a day there and then joined a backpacker trip out to Ayers Rock. We spent two nights camping out under the stars in swags and it was a miracle neither of us got pissed on by a dingo. The first day we stopped at a camel farm and had a ride on a camel called Randy. Then we trekked 6Km out at Kings Canyon in 39 degrees, which was hard work but definitely worth it! Then we had dinner while watching the sunset at Mount Connor.
On Wednesday we did a 7 Km hike at the Olgas in similar temperatures to the previous day, and although we saw some wild wallabies it didn't have quite that same appeal as Kings Canyon because they look fairly similar from all angles. We spent that afternoon at the aboriginal cultural centre and learned a bit about the aborigines and the surrounding area, but best of all had an ice-lolly and hung out in air-conditioning. Then we had dinner and watched the sunset over Ayers Rock.
Yesterday we got up at 4:30am to watch the sun rise at Ayers Rock, and then we did the base walk around the rock which was brilliant and best of all.... flat. The trip was great and our group was really nice.
We took a flight out to Perth from Ayers Rock after the hike, and were pleasantly surprised to be upgraded to business class, which was hilarious because we were both fairly stinky and mangy after the trip despite our best efforts at cleaning up. Unfortunately we then spent the rest of yesterday hanging around the hostel (and sleeping) because the morons managed to put one of our bags on a flight to Sydney and we had to wait up til midnight to get it back. It's now officially better travelled than we are.
We had a wander around Perth today, it's a lovely city so we'll probably just spend the next few days exploring. We fly to Singapore on Monday.
Take care!
Love Helen and Ben xxxx
