After breakfast on Day 6, the 2019 Cohort boarded a bus to travel to the suburb town of Poricany to tour and visit Czechia's oldest and enduring engineering castings manufacturer: Benes a Lat. We were met by Josef Lat, Commercial Director.
Benes a Lat has been in business for many years. During the Communist occupation, the company was assumed by the government, but when the Soviet Union fell, ownership reverted back to the founding family. Josef is a very engaging individual who has an obvious love and passion for his company. They manufacture metal and plastic parts using mostly traditional foundry methods, however they do use a many new technologies such as CT scans and MRI machines to heck for quality, and they have been investing in new technologies as well, however, the lack of available employees (due to an unemployment rate of almost zero in Czechia) is making it a challenge to find people to man those machines. Czechia's corporations are discovering that elimination of unemployment is not the utopia everyone thinks it would be.
Josef escorted the Cohort throughout the entire plant, showing every type and steps of operations for every type of product that Benes a Lat manufactures.
