Today was another adventure in Belize.
We left at 7:30, to head to c*** comb wildlife refuge, jaguar reserve. Jaguars are night animals and shy from humans, so we didn't see any of them, nor did we expect to. But it was a great adventure anyway.
Gilbert ("Gilly") was our guide and he spent lots of time with us. He stopped along the way and took us into a banana plantation to explain some of the steps to us. Interesting.
In the reserve, we hiked through the rainforest and Gilly explained more about the plants and the animals. The reserve area is beautiful and that made the walk quite nice. We saw various birds and a few other animals such as lizards and crocodiles.
After the walk, we stopped and had lunch followed by another short hike to start our tubing adventure down the South Stann Creek. First time I've ever been tubing and it was a good adventure. I only got stuck a couple of times! The creek is pretty shallow. It was a different way to enjoy the jungle!
It is a bit of a drive out of the reserve. At one point we saw a deer eating at the side of the road. Not unusual to us but the interesting thing was the size of the deer. it was a full grown adult deer, but it was about the same size as a regular dog. We also stopped a couple of times to see some more birds. I was hoping to see a toucan and after some patience I did see one fly by. Bit of a blur and no photos, but I can say I saw one.
I did see a couple of birds that look similar to the toucan, and we also saw a flock of interesting birds, Montezuma birds, that were feeding. They are interesting and vocal birds. When then make a noise, they actually lean over and sometimes even hang upside down . Very strange looking!
That's about it for now. Just under 2 days left in Belize. . .
