Mon 16 July 2012. We left Longreach and headed up the road to Winton. Winton is known as the beginning of the Dinosaur Trail. We free camped behind the North Gregory Hotel which only takes about 10 vans. We were dwarfed in our little camper - huge caravans surrounded us. Once we parked we then walked down the road to the Waltzing Matilda Centre. Hard to believe they actually made a museum based on a song. It was quite interesting though. Banjo Patterson wrote the song while he was in Winton so that's their claim to fame. It was quite well done really and they had a hologram presentation which was excellent based on life in Australia and what it means to be an Aussie. Then out the back they had the museum with the old cars and farm equipment. Got some ideas for Church Street . We were told that we had to visit the pub at happy hour to hear "Helen" sing and tell her stories. Hmmmm - at least the beer was cheap.
Tue 17 July - We visited "Age of Dinosaurs". Located about 10 km south of Winton on the tar and then 11 km in on the dirt. What a fantastic place! We spent a couple of hours here learning how they dig up the bones from the area. What painstakingly slow work it is. They only dig about 3 months of the year and with the bones they find there, it gives them 5 years of lab work. It's the only place in the world where you can actually see the bones in a temperature controlled room. You can volunteer to spend time here training to chip away the rock from the bones found. After a morning here we headed north east to Hughenden then on another 70 km to Porcupine Gorge National Park. What a find! As we felt very ripped off that we didn't get to Carnarvon Gorge we thought this would appease us. We weren't disappointed.
Wed 18 July. We hiked 1.2km downhill to the gorge and took a packed lunch and our swimmers. I hope our photos do this place justice. It was just beautiful.
Thu 19 July. Leaving Porcupine Gorge in the morning and drove to Richmond via Hughenden again. We spent the afternoon at Lake Fred Tritton with Kerry reading in the sun and DB fishing for that elusive barra. Unfortunately, no fish for dinner. Free camped at the RV Park at Richmond. Nice and warm today. It was about 33 degrees while we were at the lake.
