Well hello there agin..!
Thought we better do another blog today considering the amount we have done and seen and driven in the last couple of days! So we had a bit of a ball in Hokitika watching the 20-20 with another English couple and cheering rather loudly when we fully whooped the Black caps! The next day...Wednesday (we think)...we headed down the west coast through top Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers. Did a couple fo walks around Franz Josef and then headed off to Fox to stay the night..Fox is absolutely gorgeous, much better than FJ for sure as you can probably tell by the pics!? Walked around Lake Matheson which would be totally spectacular when Mt Cook pokes it's head out but we went late afternoon and it wasn't playing! Although the next am in was there in full force and took our breath away.
On Thursday we did an enormous drive from Fox to Wanaka...it took us forever because it was just incredible. Some of the most amazing scenery ever! We decided to have a bit of a brekkie stop at Bruce Bay and that was where we saw about 30 dolphins playing in the water just off shore....we decided against brekkie due to crazy amount of sandflys and went slightly up the road to watch the dolphins...they are some time wasters we watched them for bloody ages!
Then down through Mt. Aspiring NP with Waterfalls galore, beautiful Mount Aspiring and the freezing but damn stunning Blue Pools which Tim decided to take a dip in yelling "This is as cold as Jersey on Christmas Day!" I didn't laugh honest!! The walk to the pools was slightly mad, there was the swingiest swing bridge ever that had a max of 4 people at a time because it was so rickety...nice!! Did it though! Then onto Wanaka which was so chilled out and beautiful...a long day but absolutely awe inspiring. The campsite was spaceships crazy about 5 of them so we met an awesome couple who were on their honeymoon and bumped into our cricket watching companions again, having seen them a few times during the drive...so a great eveing chatting etc!
Yesterday we drove form Wanaka to Oamaru which was absolutely deserted but beautiful...a lovely chilled out day feeling like we were the only people in the world..but more petrol required! We popped to see a Yellow Eyed Penguin colony at Bushy beach and we met another couple exchanging storied for a while and then the seals appeared and after that the Penguins started coming out fo the water...they are outstanding..we must have been about 50ft up a cliff from the beach and the little cutie's climbed all the way up there to nest...at one stage we were only about a foot away from one of them with it's baby (that wasn't so small but still had it s fur..bless!). We follwed this little chap/chapess aorund the headland fascinated by it's strength and climbing ability..the greatest thing was there was hardly anybody there and it wasn't planned or anything we just randomly did it!! Awesome...!
Enjoy the pics..and Happy 21st Bobby!!!
