G'Day everyone, just a quick update on our travels. We have just left Darwin Airport and have witnessed a huge tropical storm, delaying us slightly, but we are now in the air on our way to Singapore! Flight ok so far.. Andy is happy we have just had lamb curry and a cucumber sarnie for tea, although i thought the best bit was the dairy milk bar included (such a treat! )
Our last two weeks in Oz have consisted of too many long drives, a lot of rain and finally some strong Aussie sunshine, so at least we dont look like such Brits abroad now. (Andys T Shirt suntan has now gone!!) We have been driving for 6 hours plus each day and have been up early breaking the journeys with a bit of fun. Stopping at Danger Falls the other day on our way up the coast, this was a truley unforgetable experience, both swimming underneath the huge falls, the water here was icy cold, and the contrast of the sun and the spray created a rainbow. Locals pop here on there lunch break for a quick dip and crazy kids jump from the top, all a bit to scary for me, although Andy did fancy having ago!(unfortunatly he wasnt allowed by me poor Andy!)
Calling in at Katooma for a couple of nights, the weather began to clear so popped to get some supplies from town, unfortunatly on our return we arrived back at the campsite to find the wind had got up and our tent had been destroyed, both poles had split into and it had a hole in the top. Both gutted (i cryed) we went out to buy another one, an expense we could really have done without at this point in the trip!
Visiting Airlee Beach hoping to relax with some sun, sea and sand we found that it was Stinger season all the way up the east coast. At first i thought that the sea was full of Sting Rays but its actually Box Jelly Fish season so its not safe to swim in the sea (despite locals telling us its ok!) so we decided that lazing around the pool would be the safer option! After another long drive up to Mission Beach we decided to stay for two nights and relax, both feeling ridicously tired from all the driving, we stayed on a lovely campsite opposite the beach also home to lots of aussie wildlife. The mosqitoes here were rife and i am covered from head to toe in bites which is as you can imagine very attractive! Again no swimming here either, so took a long walk along the beach instead, both strolling along in the sun we wondered why we were the only ones on the beach and realised that it might not be safe as it was edged with bush and known for its salt water crocs in the area! (Speaking with a couple later that evening they said that last year when they were visiting the whole beach was evacuated because there was a 5 foot croc sunbathing!) So opted for the pool again after that! Met an English family who took pity on u as we hadnt had a beer since New Years Eve due to a lack of funds, so sat up drinking with them until the early hours!
Making our way up to Cairns we called in at Joshepine Falls to break the drive (recomended to us by a Danish guy). After a short walk through the rainforest we enjoyed a refreshing swim in clear water, here we slid down the rocks in to the freezing water which was great fun. Andy managing to slip landing with all his weight on his elbow, which coseqently ballooned and was also very painful, luckily it was just bruised and after a lot of ice it has gone down! Arriving in Cairns we checked into our hostel, which quite honestly was the worst one yet, it was filthy, and after being given two keys to rooms already occupied, this left us with no confidence in security. Andy also attracted 3 crazy people in the space of half an hour so we both got the impression that the area we were in wasnt the best! Sun out again so explored round the city with Nick, a lad we met on arrival at the hostel we walked along the Esplanade and chilled out round in the pool looking out to sea, 34 degrees and boiling! Both looking forward to our arrival in Singapore the pilot has just informed us that its 30 degrees and cloud! We land at half 7 in the evening and need to make our way on the MRT (Singapore style underground) to Mt St Emily where we begin our Asian adventure!
