It seems to be my turn to update the blog - and it's also been a while since we last posted some news. Well - not that much happened in our little world, we have a hard time remembering what month we're in - how am I going to remember what we were up to these last two weeks…?
We've basically been heading north ever since we left our last WWOOFing stint by Perth. The coastline is just spectacular. We've done a lot of wild camping and thoroughly enjoy having a spot all to ourselves right by the ocean. We spent two days in the Kalbarri National Park and got to move our softer and softer getting bodies a bit. We went on a three hour hike (or bush walk as they Aussies like to call it) along the Murchison river gorge which at times made us feel like we were part of a Wild West film and Jason kept whistling the theme song from "the good, the bad and the ugly". From the Kalbarri NP we headed further north to the Shark Bay World Heritage area - don't fear for us with all the sharks. First you have to get through the clouds of mosquitoes to make it to the beach, then get past the poisonous Stone Fish buried in the sand along the water edge before you're even close to a shark…. At the end of the peninsula they have the Monkey Mia dolphin research station where the dolphins come into the bay several times in the morning - that was quite neat to see and we also spotted a turtle and some pelicans. The beach there was gorgeous, almost not fly and mosquito infested, they had several free hour-long movies on the ocean life along the coast and so we ended up spending the whole day there launching, watching movies, sipping lattes….
Currently we are up in Carnarvon, the tropical fruit plantation capital of WA. We already checked out some of the local fish stores and will take our bikes on a plantation tour tomorrow and hopefully stock up on fresh fruit.
For all of those who have never seen Jason lose his composure… I personally witnessed it: all it took was about 20 mosquitoes on each leg and about 10 under his wind breaker while he tried to take down the van awning… not a pretty sight. I had to grab my sweater, run out to his rescue, start swatting at the mosquitoes on his legs…. he was moving erratically at this point. Back in the safety of the van he kept swatting and at the same time wildly sprayed himself with mosquito repellent. Quite the sight… especially considering I could experience this quite calmly as the mosquitoes clearly seem to prefer Jason's blood flavour. The sight a few minutes later was less pretty - he was covered from head to toe in big ugly red welts…. And ever since we make sure to wear our "protective clothing", to not open the door for longer than necessary and to star gaze from the safety of our van.
We'll keep heading north from here and will hopefully get to do some snorkelling at the Ningaloo Reef by Exmouth (hopefully the mosquitoes will have died by then…).
