This was the bit I'd been waiting for...the South Island, and it certainly didn't disappoint.
After a couple of days in the South Island we hiked up the Franz Josef glacier. This was hard work I can tell ya!!! The day itself was rubbish again, bloody rain!! Anyway, we started to walk along the side of the glacier on the actual mountain itself, which is rainforest - so warm and a little humid, and yet to your left you've got this massive bock of ice. Very strange. The trek along the mountain was hard as of course it was up hill and very steep in places. Eventually we got to the glacier where had to put on some cramp-ons (the spikes that help you to walk on the ice). Had about an hour on the glacier itself looking at some of the formations and crevasses, had a few photo's taken but the time seemed to fly by and before we knew it we were on our way back down.
A day or so later we headed to Queenstown - the adrenalin capital of the world. I ell in love with this place, I'd heard so much about it but this would definitely be on my list of places to come back to. Unfortunately the weather wasn't that great whilst we were there and so some of the activities we had booked were cancelled. On the second day I had my first bungy jump from the Ledge which itself is about 400m above Queenstown (the jump itself is only about 40m). So when you get up there although the views are amazing the jump was a little daunting. To be fair, looking bak the jump was good, but at the time a swore to myself I was never going to do a jump again - a beer followed very shortly.
Anyway, on the last day we had an early start and today I was doing a tandem jump at Kawarau River (the original AJ Hackett bungy) with one of the lads Dan. He wanted to get fully dunked in the river - what they call 'Finding Nemo'. Today however was absolutely freezing so manged to talk him round to just a half a dunk. By the time we were about to do the jump, I couldn't feel my feet. But we did the jump and it was awesome, definitely wanted to do that one again.
From Queenstown we headed to Milford Sound where where we were taking an overnight cruise around the Sound. Milford Sound is the fiordland on the West coast of New Zealand. We stayed in a quiet cove overnight but before dinner we were able to use some kayaks and kayak around the cove. In the morning they took us through the fiordland to the Tasman Sea and back where we saw some amazing waterfalls - the scenery was awesome.
Lake Ohau was our last stop before heading to Christchurch for the end of the tour. Lake Ohau was in the middle of nowhere but was absolutley wonderful. So peaceful and in the evening we had the best views in New Zealand of the night sky - no light pollution whatsover. In the morning we had brief glimpses of Mount Cook before it was covered again by the cloud. On the way out of Lake Ohau we stopped off a view point of Mount Cook - and the scenery again was brilliant. Unfortunately the photo's don't do it justice - and I found that a lot so far on my travels.
Anyway, Christchurch was the last stop before heading to Melbourne, Australia. Can't believe it, time is absolutely flying!!!
