Spent the day travelling to Phnom Penh and arrived late at night, checked into 'mad monkey' and headed for some street food. Got an early night ready for a big day.
Up bright and early ready to see s21 genocide museum and the killing fields. Such an absolute eye opener! Basically in short terms, pol pot wanted everybody to be equal so he took the uneducated and hardworking farmers and brainwashed them to believe that he could give them a better life if they joined with him. Once they had all joined together they tortured and killed educated people and even people with soft hands as they were believed to be lazy. They also killed the peoples children as they thought if they didn't they would fight back later in life. It's crazy to hear about Cambodian people killing Cambodian people and the scariest thing about it all is the fact it only ended 30 years ago.
Was amazing to show our respect to the 20,000 people who lost their life, this is 1/4 of the Cambodian population who were killed by this man.
The museum and killing fields contain skulls, clothes, bones and other memorabilia from this awful time and it really hits home how serious this was. Was also crazy to bump to Amalie and Sofia here.
After however long we have now been traveling for, words cannot describe the shear excitement we felt when we saw a genuine costa nestled into the streets of Phnom Penh. One of our main conversations we seem to have is about what English food we miss the most. And although we had near enough blown our budget for the day we could not resist letting ourselves have this treat! Panini's, iced latte shakes and smoothies, the best food we have tasted in a good few weeks. However we couldn't stop ourselves. After scouring the cake cabinet, next mission was for Kelly and Charlotte to persuade Georgie to join in the desert fun. This would mean we could get 3 different cakes and all share each one, didn't take long especially as it was Georgie's brothers birthday so we told her it would be like her share of the birthday cake. Definitely worth it! All in all absolutely amazing and definitely worth the extra money!
Walked in the bar in the hostel to see Lloyd, Ben, Tim (3 Essex lads) and Aid. Night out it is, lots of beer and even more laughing gas. Literally thought our heads were going to explode. Ended up in banana bar and was good to see Sofia again.
