A very very long and overdue travelblog required I think. Just a quick explanation why it hasn't been updated. Whilst we went crocodile hunting in Darwin, I got both my hands bitten off and have consequently not been able to use a keyboard. Now that all my digits have grown back I can keep it updated.
So much has happened and we've been so busy and I've been so lazy so hence no blogs. However so much to tell. I can't remember where I got to last time but we had a brilliant time on the way up through to Alice Spings and then after a couple of days of intriguing Aboriginal culture (particularly lovely good looking race) for those lucky enough to meet an aboriginal you may detect a weeney bit of sarcasm. We had a nice couple of days in Darwin but when you're travelling through a place knowing that you flying out 5 days later with the equivalent of about 100 quid to your name it sort of limits your activities. Darwin is a nice enough place but it's more of base to go off to various other locations such as deep sea fishing and the different national parks which are only a few thousand KMs down the road. Bit gutted that we couldn't afford to do any of the tours and spend a bit of time hunting crocs and pretending to be an Ozzi ocker but no money so unlucky! Whilst we were in Darwin we managed to explore a fair bit on bikes and get out of the centre which is pretty much Irish bars and drunken Irish people. Luckily we had a nice hostel with a nice pool and because the weather was so nice its was good to just kick back and relax for a bit. Also a very cost effective way of not making yourself homeless with no money or food - the plan was to get work in Cairns which we flew to after our five days in Darwin.
On arrival in Cairns, we soon realizedthat it is exactly the same as Darwin in terms of the Irish theme but worse. Must have been some good flight deals from Darwin? We were desperate for work and there wasn't really anything going so we decided on recommendation to head to Port Douglas. Port Douglas is a small seaside town about 60kms north of Cairns and it's a more expensive smart place which is great because on arrival there is a big fence with guarded gates as it's strictly no riff raff.I had to tell Liam that I would meet him back up somewhere once I'd spent some time in there.
Very fortunately Port Douglas is the easiest place in the whole world to get work if you're not Australian. There is a basic rule of thumb that if you're an Aussie (up here anyway) you're a lazy unemployable bum. Which is all good considering we were in Australia (there is a few of them here) and looking for work! If you're not able to get work in Port Douglas then you are either a terrorist, dead or Australian. Within a day I already had three jobs. My first job was working night shifts in a kitchen of a cheap and nasty bar grill. The job was actually as pretty much head chef which I have no idea how I managed to pull off but it was crap so I chucked that after a couple of shifts. Since then I have been working in a nice smart café in the kitchen which was really fun and it turns out both my bosses want to marry me because their both a bit Henry the homosexual. I have actually been working like a prisoner of war doing up to 10 hours a day 6 days a week.On my day off I have been working with Liam as pro landscaping gardener type person getting very muddy and getting harassed and terrorized by massive deadly things that live under rocks and up trees. The creatures you get up here are ridiculous, I've forgot what size ants are back home but over her there nearly as big as cats! And they really hate the English. Apart from that working in the gardens over here has been really fun and with the weather averaging about 28 to 30 degrees it's really nice. So there is a kind of another crap excuse for not writing a blog - slave labor 7 days a week.
Anyway, in general Port Douglas is one of my favorite places that I've been to in Aussi we've managed to meet so many people and by living in a tent with about a million other mosquitoes and ants we've managed to save a good amount of money to carry on the travels. As I am writing this, Liam will have just landed in Singapore as he is going to watch the grad prix with his family. He has travelled down the east coast and then back to Adelaide to say farewell to a few friends and now he's left the country. From what I've heard I think he's had a brill time whilst touring the coast and I'm already looking forward to meeting up again once back at home.
As for myself, I finished all work yesterday and had a big celebration with all my friends at Dougies which is the best hostel ever. The idea of putting the communal kitchen in the bar must be a very profitable one which can also make for some very entertaining meal times! I'm now in Cairns having travelled down from Port Douglas this morning with a slight minor headache and I have booked a scuba dive tour for tomorrow so I'll be diving the reef tomorrow and then heading down the coast on the Wednesday!
I promise I will make more of an effort to keep this thing more updated and hope everyone is well and pleased to know that I didn't get eaten by a snake. Willxx
