Aloha! We have arrived in Waikiki Beach on the island of Oahu. We are enamoured with the warm welcome of the locals and the Aloha spirit that is evident everywhere. Friendly, warm and authentic people from our uber and taxi drivers to the locals living in our complex. We are staying in a vacation rental with my dad a couple blocks from the beach. Waikiki is a tourist town and the locals claim to steer clear unless they work here. I can understand, but I think we will enjoy our time here. It is a beautiful beach that goes on for miles and has diamond head crater at the east end magnificently looking over the thousands of beach goers. There is big hotel after big hotel on the water, yet it doesn't feel too pretentious somehow. We are settling into the rhythm here....hang loose, chill out, enjoy life!
Our plan for the time we are here is to take advantage of the warm weather (28C) with sunshine and glowing glorious sunsets. To enjoy the great food available, like Japanese cuisine, and fresh seafood which Chris reminds me he will have Poke (raw fish bowls)everyday! To spend time renewing by the ocean (we had our first swim in the warm pacific yesterday) and to savour time away from the busyness of life. Oh, and to soak up the rich and beautiful lush culture around us. We are blessed, we are grateful, we are lucky!
Today we will venture out on a catamaran for a little sail. I hope to be able to swim everyday as well! And my goal for today is to try shaved ice...totally attainable! Mahalo!

Michelle Aloha! 25+ years later, and the Waikiki Beach still calls to me. Give it my regards please. I hope to visit it sometime soon. Enjoy!!!
Ida Here’s the shaved ice I had mentioned http://matsumotoshaveice.com/ Enjoy!
Yukiko Sounds great! I liked acai bowl too. And pineapple whip!
Liz I totally recommend the Diamond Head hike. Lots of stairs but the view is incredible. At the base of Diamond Head is an open market too. Next to the Hale Koa Hotel (near the Hilton Village Resort I think) is the Army Museum. It is small but very interesting. If you go to Pearl Harbor, I recommend getting the audio tour narrated by Jamie Lee Curtis. It is an incredible experience.
