A French couple we met in Huoxay and again in Lang Parang travel by hitchhiking. So we wanted try also because the transportation is very expensive in Laos. You have to travel by bus or minivan, because there aren't any trains in Laos. Half of the country is full of mountains and hills. So we left in the morning and took a tuk tuk outside the town. Then we just waited. And after 2 hours, it was so hot and we started to get tired of waiting so we went to the bus station and took the next bus to Vang Vieng. We really aren't lucky!!
Vang Vieng is well known as the party place of Laos and the tubing. Many Australian teenagers come to Vang Vieng after their final exams and they party all night and day. The Mekong River passes through Vang Vieng so you can rent a tube for one day and just float down the river. There are many bars all the way down and usually when people arrive to the last bars they are so wasted that they cannot continue the tubing and they take tuk tuk to come back to the village. We wanted to try the tubing to see what it is really all about. It was actually very nice, you could have your beer with you when you're floating and the landscapes are beautiful. It took about 3 hours to come back to the village and we had to be back before 6 o'clock, (if you don't give back the tubes before you have to pay more). So we stopped only in one bar, and it was the last bar before arriving to the village! So about one hour we just floated and it started to be kind of boring…
Many people after coming back from the tubing were so drunk and high on everything ( you can buy everything there; opium, weed, mushrooms…) that they couldn't walk straight anymore. Also everyday you could see people with bandage or walking sticks because they have had an accident . The courant wasn't strong but there were some really sharp stones where you could hurt yourself.
One day it was raining in Vang Vieng so in every bar and restaurant they show Family Guy on TV. It's weird that every bar shows the same series. But it was nice to sit and watch TV and doing nothing! Perfect for a hung over day!
We met the French couple, Steph and Ode, who were hitchhiking in Vang Vieng also, so we decided to leave with them to Vientiane by hitchhiking. We left early in the morning and in one hour we got a car. We paid some money to the driver but it was much cheaper than buying a bus ticket.
