The Bateau-Lavoir, in Montmartre
The temporary exhibit at Les Regards, was fabulous! It explained a "building" in Montmartre, that was called Le Bateau-Lavoir. It was a conglomeration of single rooms made of brick & wood on the side of an old quarry. All the little rooms were arranged on one side, like a steamer boat (that's why the funny name). There was only 1 water source for all the "renters", who were all starving artists. It became a sort of laboratory of ideas & successes. Artists who lived & worked there included Braque, Derain, Dufy, Juan Gris, Vlaminck, Picasso, & Suzanne Valadon.
