Jean Cocteau, "homme de lettres", the very essence of the Paris literary world.
Cocteau thought of himself as a poet, but he also wrote plays. One of his plays, Le Bel Indifferent, was written for his friend Edith Piaf, the "little sparrow" of Montmartre, a famous singer. Cocteau was a big player in the Paris artistic world--he worked with Picasso & Chanel. He struggled with opium use, & was rumored to be a Nazi collaborator. He died one day after hearing that Edith Piaf had died.
