The "Goddess"--from Sicily to LA and back!
Limestone body and marble heads and arms, hair most likely was bronze, this is the only cult figure from the late 5th century period to survive nearly intact from head to foot. The Getty owned this statue (paid $18 m for it!), but was convinced to "give it back". The statue was originally thought to be Aphrodite, but is now considered to be Persephone, daughter of Demetra, who was captured by Hades in the nearby lake Perusa, and remained underground until saved (for all but 4 months of the year) by her mother from living underground year-round. This is all beginning to make sense!
