This is an Etruscan town, & it still has one original Etruscan gate.
Built of massive, volcanic tuff stones in the 4th C BC, this arch was part of the town's 4 mile wall. Volterra had 25,000 people then (only 6,000 today), & was one of 12 leading towns in the confederation of Etruria Propria. Eventually they fell to the Romans.
