The Sienese think that the original story of Romeo & Juliet originated in Siena with 2 families: the Ptolomei & the Salimbeni. Before we got to Siena, Costanza, our guide, recommended that I read "Julieta", by Anne Fiore. The author compared the lives of medieval Siena lovers to the Shakespeare lovers, & threw in a mystery as well.
