Rope beds were common in Colonial Salem, with mattresses stuffed with straw. The bed is hinged, allowing the bulk to be folded during the day. Due to the lack of heating, families slept huddled together in beds of this size. Sometimes they sewed young children into their clothes to keep them warm.
