In the 16th c, Rabat saw the arrival of Muslims, who'd been pushed out of Spain (due to Ferninand & Isabella's Spanish takeover of Grenada). These Moors quickly settled in the MEDINA & by the 17th c, Portuguese pirates were patrolling the seas, using cannons like this one.
