There are no crocodiles in Nimes, or in France, for that matter. This crest tells the story of Egypt & the Romans. The Romans went to Egypt to conquer it, which they did, & the common soldiers (Roman & Gauls) who fought for Rome were rewarded with rich lands in the Nimes area. Who knows? Maybe our house was once a Roman vineyard! Villevieille was the site of a large Roman camp. The ruins are a 3 minute walk from our front door.
