Part of a Roman water system
There is very little water on Malta. From the beginning, collecting water & storing it for usage was extremely important. Even in present day Malta, everybody has tanks on the roofs to collect the water, then pipes to get it down to the cistern, some quite large, some bell-shaped, some square. George remembers his uncle storing all his cheeses in his large cistern in the summer.
