There are 2 medinas, & one "Ville Nouvelle" (New Town), created specifically for the French people to live in). The medinas are ancient labyrinths, that were actually saved by the "Villes Nouvelles" because the General Layautey (the head of the French Protectorate government) thought they should be preserved. The French did bring a European organization to this & other Arab cities. We could see it in the wide boulevards lined with trees & sidewalks, so different from the ancient medinas.
