The statue was erected in the St. Nicolas Square by Louis Napoléon, the first Emporer's nephew.
Napoléon III reigned from 1809-1870, & used his uncle's "magic" to consolidate his power. He attracted support from the Corsican merchants & upper middle classes & rewarded them with cabinet spots. This solidified the "Frenchification" of Corsica.
