Charlemagne's Sarchophogus
When Charlemagne died, he was buried in the chapel's choir in this sarchophogus. In 1000AD, Emperor Otto III had Charlemagne's vault opened. His body was in a remarkable state of preservation, seated on a marble throne, in imperial robes with his scepter in his hand and the Gospels lying open on his lap. Otto was also buried in the floor of the chapel.
