Lauren and I had arranged to meet Nikki at reception at quarter past seven to go and have breakfast and get something for our lunch. It was another crazy experience of taking your life in your own hands every time you crossed the road. We went across to the big local market to try and find freshly baked baguettes but had no luck, as it was huge and we didn't remember the instructions of where to find this stall. Instead we ended up going into a coffee shop and ordering sandwiches there. I wasn't very well when we went back to the hotel, I have been here less than 24 hours and I had defiantly eaten something that didn't agree with me :(
We left the hotel at 8am on a bus to go to the Cu Chi Tunnels. Cu Chi was a battlefield in 1960 - 1979 and had a 200km long tunnel system in where they lived. It was an hour and a half in the bus to get to the museum type place, and it was full of tourists. There was lots of cruise ship groups everywhere, but not sure where the port was their ships came into.
The guide was really good though, and it was a very interesting morning. I wasn't feeling well at all though, had a really sore head and felt like I was going to be sick. We had the opportunity to shoot a target with the guns that were used during the battle, but they were so loud I didn't feel up for it. I did go into the tunnels though, which were so small and hot. The tunnels were on 3 floors, the first floor was at 3 metres under ground, the second at 6 metres and the third at 9 metres. On the first floor there was a hospital, kitchen, communal area etc, we went into a room on the first floor then went down to the tunnels on the second. It was an amazing place, with unbelievable history and it was only 40 years ago.
I slept on the bus on the way back to Saigon as I didn't feel well at all. It was a really hot morning, so it was nice to get the air conditioning :) When I woke, I did feel a bit better and managed to eat my baguette, which maybe wasn't a good idea but hey. Lauren and I headed out as soon as we got back to experience a bit of Saigon. We went down to two markets and the supermarket. I managed to get a new bag to replace my cream disgusting handbag that smelt and was falling apart. I was so chuffed to chuck that one out and pack my new one.
We came back to the hotel to get showered and have some chill time before meeting the group at 6pm for our first overnight train. During the chill time, I tried writing my blog but ended up emailing and texting folk at home. I'm so glad I didn't go home when I was meant too :)
I had a small baked tattie wi cheese before leaving the hotel but I mean it was small. I had never been on an overnight train before so I had no idea what to expect. The train departed at 8pm, we had a bus pick us up from the hotel and take us to the station. It was quite exciting, even though I was feeling totally rubbish.
The train had 4 people to a room. Since Lauren, Nikki and I are the only single travellers we stayed together and shared with Charles. It was amazing, we were in first class and it was better than I ever expected but Charles said not to get used to this as the other trains aren't good at all. There was complementary water, flat screen TV, flowers and it was really clean, what else do you need?!
I'm so lucky to have Lauren and Nikki going all the way to Bangkok, they're really nice girls. Starting to get in the swing of this Asia malarkey already. Let's hope it's a fantastic trip. It is definatly a funny feeling being on a train, who knows what it's going to be like to sleep. Time will tell I suppose.
Charles put on a documentary on the Vietnamese war on his laptop, so 6 others squeezed into our dorm to watch it. The volume wasn't that loud so it was quite hard to hear, but their was some unbelievable graphics. It passed the evening anyways. xxx
